What itinerary for 2 weeks in Thailand?
Sacdeneya · 2026-01-03
Hi there,
So many things to see that I’m not sure what route to take for my two-week trip at the end of February. I initially thought about spending a few days in Chiang Mai and then heading down to Koh Samui and Koh Tao, but the travel time is long, and the flight from Chiang Mai to Koh Samui is really expensive. So, I’m looking for an alternative after Bangkok while keeping Koh Samui and Koh Tao. Maybe this itinerary, but I’d love your thoughts:
Day 1-3: Bangkok (3 days)
Day 4-5: Kanchanaburi (2 days)
Day 6: Transit Bangkok → Koh Samui
Day 7-9: Koh Samui (3 days)
Day 10-12: Koh Tao (3 days)
Day 13: Return to Bangkok

Sacdeneya, I shared the description of my trip in the neighboring thread. If I were you, I’d have already booked hotels on the islands even with an imperfect itinerary because the good value-for-money places can fill up fast.

Hi there,
- I’d add 1 to 2 nights in Kanchanaburi.
- On the way back from Kanchanaburi, I’d make sure not to go through exhausting Bangkok again by doing what I already explained to YuliyaS in message 5 of your first thread—except in your case, when the train arrives in Surat Thani, you’d head straight to the port for Koh Samui.
- I’d skip the Koh Tao stop and redistribute the "saved" days between Koh Samui and Kanchanaburi.

One more point if you're still considering flying to Koh Samui: time-wise, it's totally doable to return from Kanchanaburi in the morning and catch your Bangkok Airways flight to Samui the same afternoon. So don’t waste a night in transit in Bangkok that day—you can use it better elsewhere.
Kanchanaburi to Bangkok by bus #81 a/c (departs every 20 mins, 2-hour trip) + taxi to Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) (1.5–2 hours, since you’ll cross Bangkok from west to east).
If you’re not flying directly to Samui but to another nearby city, you might need to depart from Don Muang Airport. In that case, everything can still be done in one day: minivan from Kanchanaburi to Bangkok Mo Chit (departs every 20 mins, 2.5–3-hour trip*) + 45–60 min taxi to Don Muang Airport (DMK).
*Luggage is carried on your lap. If you have a lot, you can always buy an extra seat to store it—it only costs 4–5 €.
