Recommendations for Bangkok-Chiang Mai route

RogerG · 2026-01-07

Hello,

We’re an adventurous couple in our 70s starting to plan around 3 weeks in Thailand in January 2027.

We’re not yet at the nitty-gritty stage, but we really don’t like wasting time on luggage, airports, or long journeys.

So, we’ll probably spend a few days in Bangkok, then head up to Chiang Mai by car at a relaxed pace, and fly back to Bangkok.

Any thoughts on this plan and, most importantly, recommendations for the Bangkok to Chiang Mai route that should take about 5 days?

Thanks in advance

Hi there, if you want something more unique than the usual tourist bus routes, I suggest the stops Singburi - Uthai Thani - Tak or Sukhothai, then Lampang.

If you need hotel recommendations, just let me know.

Hi, To continue Jojoone1’s “more original” series, instead of the overly sanitized and crowded ruins of Sukhothai, I recommend those of Si Satchanalai, a bit further north: same style but quieter, more character, and no constant noise from lawnmowers. Next, head to the charming historic town center of Phrae* and its old teak houses.
