Where to settle in for a long wait at OR Tambo Airport?

Titikk · 2026-01-10

Hi there, For our trip in a month, we’ll have a long wait at OR Tambo. Our flight from Port Elizabeth lands at 2 p.m. and our return flight doesn’t leave until 11:45 p.m. I’m looking for either a nearby spot to kill time or a quiet corner in the airport to catch some sleep and relax. Any ideas, please? Thanks

If your budget isn’t already blown, you can spend a few hours at the bars or restaurants in the InterContinental (right across from the arrivals hall).

Haha, true, it’ll depend on the budget. If we’ve blown it all, we’ll just plop down on a chair at the airport 😂

If you're low on cash but still up for it: the Apartheid Museum is a good half-hour from OR Tambo (by taxi). You’ve got about ten hours (roughly seven after formalities), and there are left-luggage lockers at the airport. Adventure to the end. 😉

We always head to the bar at the Intercontinental—it’s just one street to cross from the terminal.

Always pleasant, and if the weather’s nice, we stay on the terrace. Prices are what you’d expect for a restaurant in Europe, for example.
