Where to buy alcohol in Chefchaouen and Merzouga?
LuckySue · 2026-01-11
Hi, I’d like to know where we can buy beer or wine in Chefchaouen and around Merzouga. We’ll be doing a circuit and staying at the Parador Hotel in Chefchaouen and in a bivouac in Merzouga.
Thanks for any info you can share!

Ah! There’s a question for a Breton...😇
No need to look any further—unless things have changed, you’re in the right place. That said, you didn’t pick the best hotel... The Parador isn’t great.😕
You’ve got the Bab um rbia bar... on the same street as the Parador.
I don’t know if they still sell alcohol there, but I’ve had a few drinks at the Ben Hmamou tea salon, just across the street, a while back.
There’s also the Atlas hotel up high, overlooking the city across from the campsite, with a small nightclub on the side (pretty sketchy, by the way)...
Otherwise, you’ll have to buy it in a bigger city depending on where you’re coming from.
The little dive bar on the square has closed.🏴☠️
Cheap wines like Boulaouane or Cuvée du Président aren’t too expensive, even if they’re pricier than in Europe... There are a few decent wines like Médaillon or La Petite Ferme...
There are spots in Tetouan, the nearest big city...
Chefchaouen is supposed to be a holy city—I didn’t know of any alcohol shops, but now everything’s going downhill in the country, so who knows, maybe there are some now...😎
Bssaha !

Darn, I forgot Merzouga... There are already two bars there... Chez Jordi, kaskah merzouga... there's also a shop that sells some near Takojt, but I can't remember the name... That said, if you're driving, like in Chefchaouen, do your shopping in a big city... You'll pay less...

Always great tips from Groschats.
Otherwise, don’t you have a lead on some salted butter? 😄

Thanks for the heads-up on the "gabelle" (wink wink) 😉
But when you roll into Chaouen, it’s usually the start of your vacation—so you should still have at least 150 kg of stock in the van, right?! 😎
For our friend from Quebec, head to Carrefour in Tétouan instead (e.g., the cheapest wines are 100 MAD in Chaouen vs. around 40 MAD at Carrefour) to stock up for your whole trip. There’s also a depot in Erfoud. It’s not worth making big detours just to pair wine with a single night of kefta brochettes, but it might be worth it if wine is as sacred to you as salted butter is to jipé.

Carrefour is a great idea—you might want to bring a cooler if it’s for beers or white wine, warm beer is *bleh*.
Otherwise, I go to Carrefour specifically to buy *Paysan-Breton* salted butter 😉 There’s even some with Guérande salt crystals. No idea about Tetouan, though.

I’m going there specifically to buy some salted Breton butter... 😉 They even have it with Guérande salt crystals. No idea about Tetouan, though.
In the name of Anne of Brittany, we dub thee *paotr an amanenn*...
If you haven’t already, I’d advise against giving your address to Jipé. I saw him harass an elderly woman who bought the last pack... If he finds out you’ve got stock at home... Not good...

No worries, I make my own salted butter, and I have too much respect for fans of this delicate dish. 😄

I also have buckwheat flour from St-Malo, hehe
No risk of him coming—it’s way too cold right now

Oh well, that changes everything—can we barter?
A block of butter for some lemon chicken or rfissa?

If you're gonna hit me right in the feels, give me time to load up the trailer and I'll be there. 😊
By the way Oliv, you heading back to the Bled soon?

Ugh... I should be there already... But you see... I had the bad idea of getting into politics... Starting with the local elections before aiming for the Élysée seemed like a good plan...
Anyway, I’m waiting at least until March 22nd before I leave... Either way, I’m craving some heat, so until the end of May works too. I’ll be back in time to dive into the gulag for the season.

Amazing photos. Thanks! All that snow in Morocco!
Will they have to clear the snow to play the AFCON final?

It’s really great to have all this rain and snow after years of drought.

It’s freezing, but hey, we’ve got blankets, and it’s beautiful! For the final, there’s no snow—it’s in Rabat—but they’ll be dealing with rain.
