Logistics and sightseeing questions for solo trip to Japan

PetraH · 2026-01-14

Hi there, I’m planning a trip to Japan in April/May. I’ll start my journey in Tokyo for 3 to 4 days. I’d love your advice on accommodation, transportation, an itinerary, and whether a guide would be useful. I’m traveling solo and could use a little reassurance. Before I forget... how do payments work?

Thanks for your help, Petra

Hi there,

For accommodation, there are plenty of hotels. It’s up to you to choose based on your preferences and budget. You can use Agoda or Booking.com to reserve.

For transportation, it’s pretty straightforward, especially if you have a physical IC card or one on your iPhone (Android only offers this for Japanese phones).

Otherwise, Google Maps or other apps can show you the lines and routes.

For places to visit, you’ll find plenty of ideas online—main attractions, points of interest, etc.

For payments, check with your bank about any fees, or consider cards like Revolut or N26. Also, make sure to have cash on hand, as some places don’t accept credit cards.

Two more ideas: Organic Maps instead of Google Maps because you can download maps of the places you're going to, and you won't need Wi-Fi or internet to locate yourself, ask for directions, or mark the sites you want to see on the map... perfect for areas with no coverage. Plus, it's free! For a fee-free card, go with Boursobank (a French bank, subsidiary of Société Générale) over Revolut (a Lithuanian bank with no deposit guarantee) since it's been the cheapest for over 10 years and offers a fee-free card abroad... Best regards

Hi there,

Revolut (Lithuanian bank with no deposit guarantee)

Yes, 100,000 €, same as elsewhere in France. But for how we use it, that’s not really a deciding factor.

Hi

Late April is Golden Week. You’ll want to have your hotels booked by now.
