Info on the Cederberg

Now that the Kruger part is (almost) wrapped up, I’m looking at the "Cape region" section.

The idea of spending 2 days (well, more like 2 nights and 1.5 days) in the Cederberg is really tempting 😎.

I’ve reread the posts about it—more or less (actually, more less than more)—and I still have quite a few questions: - Where’s the best area to stay? Initially, I was looking at Kagga Kama, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the cost (or the trip, for that matter), or maybe Mount Ceder? Or somewhere else (without driving 6 or 8 hours from CT 😉)? The plan is to get there in a sedan (if possible), see some beautiful landscapes, and do one or two hikes (nothing too tough 😛). - I read that you need a permit to hike there... where do you buy it? (At the entrance, like in Kruger? 🤪) - Is October a good time for the weather (theoretically...)?

hi I loved the Cederberg and Mount Ceder—they’re amazing spots. You can stay there comfortably (different accommodation options). It’s accessible. Right nearby, you’ve got the Stradsaal Cave and the San paintings—it’s stunning. You can do self-guided hikes there—I’d recommend the climb for the views and the leg workout! There’s also an easy guided hike for not much money. I’d suggest spending time exploring the area without trying to go too far. Access fees are pretty reasonable at Mount Ceder (double-check if it’s still the case, but that’s how it was 2 years ago). Anyway, for me, it’s a great choice—you can find tons of details in my travel journals!

Around Cape Town I also love Wild Coast NP—it’s a landscape paradise (just note the restaurant in the park might still be closed?). I didn’t stay in the park itself but in Langebaan, where you’ll find everything and plenty of accommodation options.

Thanks Michel for these details. I had read your travel journal ... but I was missing some practical info 😛 Your reply confirms my desire to visit the Cederberg. As for Wild Coast NP, you have to make choices on such a short trip ... and coastal/marine landscapes appeal to me less.

To get there, I’d recommend taking Bain's Kloof Pass.

I also stayed at Mount Ceder to spend a full day in the Cederberg.

Just a heads-up—the area was hit by a major wildfire in 2025. Check out the updates here

Agnès, what’s your reason for recommending the Bain's Kloof Pass? The scenery?

Great suggestion from Mme Attila! Bain's Kloof Ceres Mount Ceder (make sure to get gas, no 4x4 needed) Op die Berg, which used to be a real backwater (see my first long-winded travel journal...), now has gas and a shop—even places to eat! From Op die Berg, take a right, then the first left for Mount Ceder (it’s signposted)... let me know what you think of that stunning road... What season are you heading there, by the way?

If you're passing through Bain's Kloof, the remarkable architecture in Tulbagh is worth a stroll.

Noted, Jean-Luc... but I’m not sure we’ll have time! Now, with this fire situation, I’m having second thoughts, because a landscape that’s burned isn’t exactly dreamy—it’s actually kind of depressing 😕.

The Mount Ceder area wasn’t reached. They mention the Stadsaal Caves. Are you going in October? Nature will have recovered by then.
