Veneto in April

Hi everyone! I’m putting together our travel itinerary for Veneto at the end of April. And the more I look and research potential sites to visit, the more I find! We’ll only be there for a week—my family and I—including 3 days in Venice. So we have to make some choices... I plan to rent a car when we arrive in Venice and head straight to Bergamo, which would be our first stop. We’d leave the car at the airport when we return to Venice so we can explore the city at our leisure.

What do you think: 1 night in Bergamo (a 2h15 drive from Venice airport), 1 night in Garda, 1 night in Verona, 1 in Padua, and 3 in Venice—would that be doable?

If I understand correctly, you’re only spending two full days in Venice—that’s not much, since there’s quite a bit to see, even if you don’t visit all the museums and churches in the city.

Bergamo is in Lombardy, that’s too far out of the way for you.

I’d look for accommodation near Mestre train station (or Venice’s station, but it’ll be pricier).

Skip the car. One day for a round-trip train to Verona, one day for a round-trip train to Padua (book the Scrovegni Chapel visit—it’s right by the station, by the way). One day for a round-trip to Desenzano to visit Sirmione. Maybe a boat tour on Lake Garda. The other days, just explore Venice itself.

hey yeah, it's best to prioritize the train. There's no point in renting a car. Trains are relatively frequent in Italy. To get from Venice Mestre to Santa Lucia, there's a train every 10 minutes

Good evening everyone, Thanks for your advice. I’d considered the train, but I initially looked into renting a car because of the price (there are 4 of us) and the freedom it gives us. It makes visiting villages possible and lets us escape the big touristy cities a bit. That said, I’m wondering if we’ll have enough time for all this great itinerary! I’ll think about it some more, especially since your advice aligns—you’re all suggesting we take our time. Thanks again to everyone!

Basically, it's 6 days "on site," so you get accommodation IN Venice itself and explore it in 4 days (including 1 day for the islands... Burano, etc.), including the outlying but gorgeous neighborhoods!

You dedicate 1 day to Padua, which is 40 km to the west (train from Mestre).

You dedicate 1 day to Chioggia, which is 50 km south at the very end of the lagoon. (Bus 80 from Piazzale Roma or better yet, Vaporetto + Ferry for the fun of it).

And then, you’ll be blown away... and you can say you’ve visited:
