What are the regulations in Iceland for overnight stays in a converted 4x4?

Hi fellow travelers, We’re planning our first trip to Iceland. We’re considering renting a 4x4 where we could sleep from time to time. My question is: What’s the current regulation in Iceland? Which areas allow sleeping in your vehicle, and where is it prohibited (requiring you to stay in campgrounds)? In June, is it possible to find spots without having booked in advance? Sergio

What is the current regulation in Iceland?

Wild camping is pretty much banned in Iceland. It’s tolerated in the highlands if you didn’t have the chance to reach the nearest campsite. It’s allowed on private property if you get written permission from the owner.

Yes, I can confirm Attila’s answer—camping has become heavily regulated since Iceland turned into such a popular tourist destination and visitors started doing whatever they pleased! 🤬

As for campsites, it’s not mandatory to book in advance. Even in July/August, we’ve always managed to find a spot to camp. Though 2026 will be an especially busy year with the solar eclipse in August.

Just so you know, there’s the Camping Card in Iceland for 180 € that gives you access to around thirty free campsites for 28 days.

Thanks so much, Girardinpho, for the info. I gather that a campsite or guesthouse is always within a short day’s drive... even in the Highlands... Can you confirm?

Apart from the tricky highland tracks, everything in Iceland is within a day’s drive... Except when there’s a storm warning.

But having to drive for hours every day just to find somewhere to stay...

Guesthouses are few and far between. Don’t count on them at the last minute. Or expect to pay an even more astronomical price than usual...

Hello, Yes, you can easily find a campsite along the Ring Road, and even farmers have set up a few paid spots on their land.

For guesthouses, prices are increasing, but as mentioned earlier, it’ll be busy this year.

In the Highlands, there are a few campsites in strategic locations, so prices are higher and not included with the Camping Card. But you’ll always find a place to sleep since the long summer days give you plenty of time to reach a campsite.
