What itinerary combines the Rainbow Mountain and the Amazon?
PascalBis · 2026-02-27
Hi everyone, my son and I are planning a 2-week trip at the end of the year and would like to visit Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) and then experience the Amazon in a lodge near Iquitos (probably Muyuna). What’s the ideal itinerary, considering there’s no direct flight between Cusco and Iquitos?
Just to clarify, we’re skipping Machu Picchu and only plan to spend one night in Lima to recover from the inbound flight.
All your tips and suggestions are welcome. Thanks!
Pascal

Hey, the answer’s actually in the question (you forgot the question mark, by the way). To get to Iquitos, you *have* to go back through Lima, so it’s up to you. Whether you do it at the start or end of your trip, I don’t think it makes much difference. It’d be a shame to miss Machu Picchu, even if it *is* super touristy.

Hi there,
If you only have 2 weeks, the only option is to fly, and obviously, you’ll need to go from Cusco to Lima, then Lima to Iquitos. Latam flights are the usual choice.
Why not consider Puerto Maldonado instead? It’s also in the Amazon but much closer to Cusco .
You can get there either by plane (about 1 hour from Cusco for around 50 €) or by bus (overnight bus for around 15 €).
