Which car should I prioritize in Réunion?

hi everyone, are there any rental car models you’d recommend for 3 weeks on the island? compact or mid-range?

Not an automatic car. Not great in mountainous areas.

A bit of power is good if you don’t want to struggle too much on the climbs.

Avoid a model that’s too bulky so you can park where space is tight and feel more comfortable on narrow roads when you need to pass others.

Maybe not too low to the ground either...

Hi, I have a 12-year-old hybrid Yaris, so it's an automatic, 4 HP, which handles mountain roads, but if there are several of you with luggage, it might be tight. However, there are more powerful engine versions available.

Personally, I actually find automatics more comfortable in the mountains, whether going up or down—it’s less tiring than the hundreds of clutch engagements you’d have to do, especially after a long hike when your legs are already tired 😉. But that’s just my opinion.

The most important thing is to have a trunk where you can fit everything—don’t leave ANYTHING visible on the seats.
