What's a good idea for a day trek in Toraja country?

Mf00 · 2026-04-18

Hello! We’re spending a few days in Toraja country at the end of May. We’d love to do a day trek—taking our time—on a route that’s stunning in terms of scenery, but not a level 5 in difficulty! Any suggestions you can share, please? Thanks in advance

Oh, nice timing for late May! Seriously, you're gonna be lucky with the weather at that time—it's just before the real rains start in June.

So personally, I'd really recommend the trek to Londa or the Buntu Pune valley if you want insane landscapes. I went there with friends last year, and honestly, it was amazing—terraced rice fields everywhere, traditional houses with those gorgeous pointed roofs, and you run into lots of locals going about their daily routines. The cool thing is it’s not super touristy compared to other spots.

Honestly, the difficulty level is super accessible—like a chill 4- to 5-hour walk max with good breaks. Some dirt paths, a few climbs, but nothing crazy. My free tip: start early in the morning, like 6:30 AM, so you avoid the heat and get killer photos with the light. I brought fruit and plenty of water—it’s important because there’s not much along the way.

For finding a guide, don’t go through the big touristy agencies—you’ll end up paying 80 € for nothing. From what I remember, we contacted our homestay directly, and they hooked us up with someone for about 25 € per person. Super nice and spoke a bit of French, too. Basically, look into that route—it’s more authentic and cheaper.

If you want something really relaxed with no big climbs, there are also some small circuits around Rantepao that are cool. But honestly, Londa is incredible—go for it! !

Hey! The most classic route from Rantepao is to Batutumonga. Personally, I did (a while back now) an 8-day trek from Rantepao to Mamasa! Fantastic! Rantepao, Batutumonga, Sepan Barupu, Panggala, Belokan, Paku, Timban, Mamasa... Days of 6 to 8 hours, covering 15 to 25 km per day... From Rantepao to Batutumonga is the easiest leg—about 13 km and 500 m of elevation gain... Amazing views of the stunning rice terraces once you reach the village...
