Tips for traveling on a budget in Albania?

We’re a young couple planning our first trip to Albania from June 23, 2026, to July 2, 2026. We have a pretty tight budget and want to make the most of this amazing country without breaking the bank.

We’re looking for all the advice you can give to help us plan our stay:

* What are the must-see places to visit? * Which cities or villages are really worth the detour? * What natural sites, hikes, canyons, springs, or viewpoints do you recommend? * Do you know of any free, uncrowded, or particularly beautiful beaches? * Where can we responsibly observe or swim with sea turtles? * What are the most beautiful beaches on the Albanian Riviera that are accessible on a small budget? * What budget-friendly accommodations (hotels, hostels, homestays, campgrounds) do you recommend? * What are the best ways to get around between different regions at a low cost? * Do you know of any reliable and affordable agencies for renting a vehicle (car, scooter, or motorcycle)? What are the average rates at the end of June, and which rental companies do you recommend or advise against? * Is it better to rent a vehicle right when we arrive or stick to local buses and minibuses to keep costs down? * Which restaurants or local specialties offer the best value for money? * Are there any free or low-cost activities we shouldn’t miss? * Which places do you think are overrated or can be skipped when you’re short on time and money? * What practical tips would you have wished you knew before your first trip to Albania?

We’d also love any 10-day itineraries that you particularly enjoyed, along with your budget estimates for accommodation, meals, and transportation.

The total budget for this off-season trip was 1500 € per person from Lyon, all included (400 € for the round-trip flights with baggage, 342 € for the car rental with two drivers, an average of 50 € for hotel nights for two).

I’ve done two 15-day trips around Albania using local transport: it’s easy and cheap. In my opinion, a car isn’t necessary. If needed, taxis aren’t expensive.

You can also reach Albania via Corfu, followed by a Corfu/Saranda ferry. Might be worth considering depending on your itinerary.

There are campgrounds (I haven’t tried them), and you can also rent cheap apartments. This lets you do laundry and avoids extra baggage fees on flights. Shopping at local stores and markets is budget-friendly.

Restaurants are cheaper than in France, and the food is great! Portions are huge, too.

Beaches are free to access.

In 10 days, you won’t be able to see all of Albania—you’ll have to make some choices!

Which natural sites, hikes, canyons, springs, or viewpoints do you recommend?

Start in the north without needing to rent a car:

Take the bus to Shkodër (a lively, youthful city). If you're at least somewhat active, rent a bike (it’s the city of bikes!) and ride to Zogaj along Lake Shkodër... also visit the castle (Rozafa) and the Mes Bridge (still by bike). Then do the route described here: https://www.mifuguemiraison.com/fr/theth-valbona-montagne-albanie/ It’s super easy to do this route: almost all guesthouses in Shkodër will provide the bus + ferry ticket, and they’ll pick you up by minibus—couldn’t be simpler! Do the day hike from Valbona to Theth. Return from Theth to Shkodër by minibus.

Which natural sites, hikes, canyons, springs, or viewpoints do you recommend?

1. The Osum Canyon near Berat (a must-visit city!). Great hikes in the canyon starting from çorovodë.

2. Hikes around Theth (in the Albanian Alps): Loop: Grunas Waterfall; Blue Eye; Qafa e Pejës; Theth/Nërnrreth-Gjelaj loop. 3. The Langarica Canyon near Përmet: beautiful hike, stunning spot! 4. Near Përmet: Sopolit Waterfall. You can continue past the waterfall to the amphitheater—it’s amazing!

Do you know of any free, uncrowded, or particularly beautiful beaches?

Pretty wild near the village of Zvërnec—a lovely beach accessible by a drivable track (only frequented by a few campervans): Dalan Beach. Nearby, visit the St. Mary Monastery on a peninsula.

Is it better to rent a vehicle right away or use local buses and minibuses to save money?

For the north, especially if you plan to hike (Valbona-Theth or just Theth), I recommend the bus from Tirana to Shkodër, then the bus/ferry to Valbona or bus to Theth. For the rest of the country, a rental car is very useful

PS: You’re only staying 8 days—that’s too short! I’d suggest limiting yourself as much as possible. In my opinion, the best plan for you would be the northern loop: Tirana → Shkodër/Valbona/Theth → Shkodër → back to Tirana (no car rental). If you have 2 or 3 days left, head to Berat. In Berat, we loved our stay at Kris Guesthouse in the citadel (perched old town).

Which places do you think are overrated or can be skipped when time and money are limited?

Skip the coast! Only a few isolated spots (hard to access) are worth it. The Riviera is overcrowded with sunbeds/umbrellas everywhere. Only Butrint is worth visiting (I say this even though I’m not a fan of "old stones"). The site itself is very beautiful (there weren’t many people there at the end of September).
