Accommodations near Namibia's parks

Hi there,

I’m planning a potential trip to Namibia for a classic circuit in April 2027.

I’m surprised by how expensive the accommodations inside the parks are—really steep! Is it possible to stay outside the parks but still close enough to enjoy the game drives?

Do you have any recommendations for more reasonably priced lodging? I’m okay with spending 200 to 250 € per night.

No camping—the friend I’m traveling with absolutely refuses 😉, but maybe upgraded tents would work.

It's a shame to sleep outside Etosha. Maybe the budget allows for at least one night inside the park? For the rest, it's less of an issue.

Namibia isn't a budget-friendly destination for solid accommodations. Unlike South Africa.

I'm not sure April is the best season for Etosha. If there's still water in the park, the animals will be more spread out.

Finally, safaris are very easy to do on your own behind the wheel. A 4x4 isn't necessary—the tracks are designed for all vehicles.

You're absolutely right... I've already given up twice on the idea of a trip to Namibia... Between the accommodations, the park, and the car rental... ouch! That stings. Only the south remains a bit affordable...

I’m a regular visitor to Namibia—sometimes camping, sometimes in lodges, guest houses, or farms.

There are accommodations that fit your criteria, even inside the parks (Etosha) or right nearby (Sesriem). Here’s a really handy site where you’ll find lots of options and their prices. I’ve used it often for scouting or booking, especially for Etosha:

For example, in Etosha, Halali has Bush chalets that are really nice. Okaukuejo and its famous waterhole are a bit pricier, but you can balance it out with some of the cheaper options.

For Sesriem, check out Quiver Desert Camp—small self-catering chalets just 4 km from the park entrance (paired with Sossusvlei Lodge for breakfasts—dinner buffet under the stars is also highly recommended!).

Otherwise, plenty of options on Booking and Airbnb.

I can suggest places in regions you’re interested in, depending on your itinerary.

Just a heads-up, though—over the last 3 or 4 years, prices have been rising by 10 to 15% annually! Namibia’s become quite trendy.

Hi there, Of course, it's possible to sleep outside the parks. You can also find furnished tents. I prefer the ones from Camping2Go (around 50 € per person per night). If you let me know the route you're planning to take, I can recommend some lodges, guesthouses, or guest farms.

Hi, I stayed at the one south of Etosha—it was pretty good. Large self-standing tent on a mopane hill, with a restaurant and pool at the bottom. You can also find it on Booking where there are lots of options!

But it’s not as good as a night at Okaukuejo with an evening at the waterhole!

Hi, We’re also planning to travel in April, so I thought I’d chime in on this thread. You mentioned it’s not the best time—just for Etosha? Is the difference really that big? Also, we’d like to rent a 4x4 with a tent. Do you know if the "standard" rental companies offer those? I’ve got rates from Avis, Hertz, and Europcar, but I don’t think that type of vehicle is in their catalog. Thanks! Eric

Hi, April is at the end of the rainy season, so you’ll see fewer animals in Etosha (they find water elsewhere, and the foliage can be dense). To rent your 4x4, you’ll need to contact local rental companies—there are plenty. No ads allowed: a quick online search will help you find lots of options.

Yes, Etosha isn’t the best time of year for that. There’s still usually enough water in the park’s off-limits areas to keep the animals there, so they don’t head to the waterholes near the roads.

For example, I didn’t see a single elephant during my trip there, even though they’re common.

For 4x4 rental, only the 4x4s rented by specialized companies offer camping options. They’re also the only ones that rent 4x4s equipped for off-road tracks (tires, suspension, etc.). For a classic circuit without camping, a 4x4 from a traditional agency is more than enough. A regular car might even work, depending on the route.

I usually go through this middleman to rent.

The last two times, the final rental company was Avis Safari Rental. No issues, except the deposit is actually charged. It’s refunded about a month after returning the vehicle, and depending on the exchange rate difference between the charge and refund, you might lose a few dozen euros (or even come out ahead).

I’ve also rented with Bushlore. No issues there either.
