Cycling from Assam through Nepal
Leybois · 2026-07-22
Hello,
We’d like to go on a 3- to 4-month bike trip starting in December, crossing from Assam (northeast India) to New Delhi via Nepal.
Are there routes with light traffic along the Brahmaputra and through Nepal?
We’re also looking for any info on accommodations, wild camping, local interactions, etc.
Thanks,
Michel

Hello,
A long time ago (about thirty years ago...), I cycled from the southern tip of India all the way to Pakistan (and beyond) via Bangladesh and Nepal. I didn’t go through Assam (it wasn’t possible at the time), but the Bhutan/Sikkim-Nepal-New Delhi route I took would be similar to yours.
Have you been to India before? Have you traveled by bike before? Just so you know, this country is considered (rightly so) one of the most challenging...
Back then, you could enter Nepal from Sikkim and follow a magnificent and relatively quiet road (or track) that crossed the Terai toward the east—the lowland, tropical part of the country—before climbing to Kathmandu via the old road. But things have probably changed a lot since then.
I strongly advise against wild camping in India. The risk is just too high. I could tell you quite a few firsthand stories where things went really wrong...
