Which island for a first trip to Greece?

Hi there, Our first trip to Greece as a couple. We're planning to spend 7 days in Greece from August 30th to September 5th. We'll reserve 2 days for Athens at the end of the trip. For the remaining 5 days, we want to visit an island—any recommendations? Thanks for your tips and details, we really appreciate it.

You should also specify whether you’re counting the arrival and departure days. If you arrive on the 30th and leave on the 5th, you’ll only have 5 full days, from the 31st to the 4th.

Hi Elenitsa, Yes, I get it—there are so many beautiful islands in Greece that it’s hard to choose! Since we only have 7 days (including 2 days in Athens), we’d like to visit one or two islands near Athens that are accessible by ferry. We want a mix of beach time and sightseeing, and we plan to rent a car. Really appreciate it, thanks!

I assume you're leaving from Montreal on the 28th to arrive in Athens on the 29th on one of the two Air Canada flights. In that case, following elenitsa's (good) suggestions, to save time you can head to:

Sifnos by ferry. If your flight arrives at 10:10, you can go directly to the port of Piraeus by metro or bus X96 (or taxi), and take the Seajets ferry at 3:00 PM (arrival in Sifnos at 5:55 PM).

Paros by ferry. A Seajets departure at 3:00 PM – arrival at 6:45 PM. A Blue Star Ferries departure at 5:30 PM – arrival at 9:30 PM.

Both of these continue to Naxos, which could also be a great destination.

For Tinos, you don’t need to go to Piraeus. From the airport, you can take a taxi to the port of Rafina (about a 25-minute trip). There are 4 ferry departures between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM (but the last one arrives in Tinos at 9:50 PM).

The option of heading straight to an island and saving Athens for the end lets you save time and recover from jet lag on an island rather than in Athens. Plus, it helps you avoid any issues from a ferry delay or cancellation on the day you planned to return. It’s better to already be in Athens for your return flight than to watch it take off from the island where you’re stuck 🙁

Paros is the perfect compromise for a first trip: it offers stunning Cycladic villages, a lovely romantic nightlife, and beautiful beaches without being as stifling or overpriced as Santorini. You should explore the cobbled, flower-lined streets of Lefkes (an adorable mountain village) or head out in the evening to the lively port of Naoussa, known for its little seaside seafood tavernas and trendy bars.

If you're looking for wide-open spaces, a more authentic island, slightly larger with gigantic golden sandy beaches, Naxos is ideal. You could rent a car to explore the inland and its traditional villages (like Halki or Apiranthos), and watch the sunset over the Portara (the great ancient gate) in Naxos Town.

If you'd rather minimize travel time to make the most of your 5 days (especially with relaxed days), Hydra is a unique gem. It's a completely pedestrian island (no cars—getting around is on foot or by donkey). The vibe is very chic, bohemian, artistic, and extremely romantic. Its 18th-century shipowners' mansions spill right into crystal-clear waters.
