Is it better to stay in Buda or Pest?

We’re heading to Budapest the first week of September and can’t decide whether to stay in Buda or Pest.

Any thoughts on this?

We’d also like to explore the surrounding areas by renting a car for a day or two—what do you recommend around Budapest?
