Is it risky to walk around Rio alone?

hi there I’m leaving on October 1st for Rio, which I’ll be exploring over 10 days while staying in Copacabana and Ipanema. After that, I’m heading to Ilha Grande, Paraty, and finally a flight to Iguaçu. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Rio. Is it possible to walk around and explore without constantly worrying about getting my phone snatched? I’m traveling alone and don’t speak Portuguese. I need GPS to get around. I love walking and don’t really like taking taxis, which is why I’ve booked two places to stay in Rio to experience different neighborhoods. But is this doable given the security concerns there?! hi there, during the day it's fine—you can stroll around peacefully. But once night falls, you should absolutely avoid isolated spots. If you're heading to the seaside in the evening, it's wiser to take a taxi. As I’ve already mentioned on this forum, Rio’s issue is the favelas above the luxury hotels. When it comes to the beach, only go if it’s crowded.

Hey, if you stick to the southern neighborhoods and the beaches, you won’t run into much trouble.

Also, avoid downtown on weekends and at night when the offices are closed—it gets sketchy.

And just so you know, as a woman, you can dress super short and no one will say anything or hit on you.

Hi Cannelle, In October 2025, we took a trip to Brazil that was somewhat similar to the one you're planning. We stayed in Rio for 6 days in the neighborhood near the Cathedral. We didn’t feel unsafe despite all the warnings we’d heard. We got around by bus, tram, metro, and Uber. After that, we took a bus to Ilha Grande, Paraty, and São Paulo. We also flew round-trip from São Paulo to Iguazu and don’t speak Portuguese either. Have a great trip! Aline

You can walk around "casually" especially in the southern part of Rio. That said, you still need to be very careful, especially since you're a woman traveling alone. Yeah, there’s always a risk of getting your phone stolen, so it’s best to stay alert. Rio’s a bit of a unique place in Brazil, particularly with the strong presence of militias in certain areas.

I'm Brazilian, living in the northeast of Brazil. I stumbled upon this website to post an ad and saw your question, so I didn’t hesitate to reply. Yes, it’s completely possible to have a great trip to Rio, but you really need to be careful. We Brazilians already have a kind of natural hypervigilance that Europeans don’t necessarily have because you’re not used to having to be wary of everyone... It’s not to scare you, but just so you stay cautious.

I saw a phone snatched in broad daylight at the foot of the Selarón Steps by a cyclist who zoomed in and out. The victim just had their phone in hand, and then—poof—it was gone.

Two guys jumped me after dark at 126 Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana, just steps from Praça do Lido, and robbed me of 50 reais at knifepoint. It was a national holiday, so there weren’t many people out on the streets. So at night, avoid going out alone, and again, it’s best to take a taxi to get back to your hotel. On the bright side, Brazilians are really welcoming and charming if you can say a few words of Portuguese. That said, there are also people with bad intentions out there.

The insecurity is very real—I need to prepare for that. Thanks for your message. There are very few people on the streets, especially at night—avoid it absolutely. Use Uber to get back.

Okay, it's going to be tricky to take photos. I can say that a lot of people warned me about this. All I have left is to try a different way of traveling that I’ve never experienced in all the trips I’ve taken. Thanks so much for your help
