Time needed for the Acropolis and museum visit

Laetiplouf · 2026-08-21 · Message 1 of 11

Hello,

We want to book our tickets to visit the Acropolis site and the associated museum. For these reservations, we need to specify entry time slots.

For the Acropolis alone: the first slot is at 8:30 AM. For the museum: 10 AM? 11 AM? We like to wander around, so here’s our question: if we haven’t finished exploring the site after 1.5 hours, is it possible to go back in after leaving the museum?

We’ll be buying tickets from the official websites—audio guides are mentioned. Any feedback on those? On sites like Get Your Guide, the prices are much higher with the audio guide included, but does that mean better quality?

Thanks for your help

Good evening, the two official sites are: -for the Acropolis: wwwhh.gr -for the Museum: wwwetickets.theacropolismuseum.gr All sites ending in .com buy tickets from these official sites and resell them at a higher price. So it's pure laziness to go through them, unless you're really not comfortable with English.

The Acropolis ticket includes the city temples at the top and the southern slopes with several restored sanctuaries and the Theatre of Dionysus. The exit is opposite the theatre, with the museum right across from it.

The smartest move is to book the museum for 11:00 AM. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the archaeological site. If you're disappointed, it's too hot, or you break a heel... and decide to leave early, the area is pedestrian-friendly with bars everywhere and small street performances. You won’t be able to re-enter the archaeological site after visiting the museum without buying a new ticket.

Happy trip planning!

Hi Laetitia,

For the museum, you don’t have to book. It depends when you go, but outside of peak season, there’s rarely a crowd. The advantage is that if you see a queue, you can easily go for a stroll in Plaka, grab a coffee, and come back later or another day. So for the museum, don’t book. There are far fewer people than at the Acropolis. It gives you more freedom.

As for the French audio guide for the Acropolis, it’s really well done. You can download it now if you want. The app is called HH Guide. It’s free. The logo is blue with a headset. You’ll also find other archaeological sites in Greece on this app, like the Agora, for example. For now, the museum doesn’t have a French audio guide, but it’s coming. However, they do have an English app available at the entrance if you’d like. It’s free too.

Have a great trip! Elenitsa

Hi, No need to book for either the Acropolis or the museum. We were there in mid-July, and by entering through the secondary entrance of the Acropolis, we got in smoothly—it was around 9:00 AM. Same for the Acropolis Museum in the middle of the afternoon. It seemed like there were fewer people than usual, or maybe there just weren’t any big cruise ships at Piraeus!!! Cheers,

Hi, Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question. I’m noting down your really helpful tips—too bad we already booked through the official sites. I’ll admit we were surprised by how complicated it was, with prices going up to over 250 € (thought they were selling us gold-plated tickets!). Have a great day

You should always book museum and archaeological site tickets on the OFFICIAL websites. NEVER on GetYourGuide or other sites.

Hello,

Your answer could be ambiguous. Booking isn’t mandatory, but if you do want to book, don’t just use any site!!! I’d put it like this. Cheers,

Marie Paule

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. But be careful—during peak season, it's best to book the Acropolis in advance (on the official site, of course). Otherwise, you might end up waiting quite a while for an entry slot.

If you want to visit the Acropolis with real golden rollerblades, it's doable via the official hh.gr site, which offers a private 2-hour tour with a guide outside of opening hours (6 AM or 7:30 PM).

It's 1000 € per person (with a minimum of 5 people).
