28-day road trip from early January to early February 2026 route: Flight Bangkok-Chiang Rai Car Chiang Rai-Mae Sai-Chiang Saen-Phrae-1143&2013-Lomsak-2195-Chiang Khan-2348&5044-Chum Phae-Nakhon Ratchasima-201&6-Bangkok-4010-Samut Songkhram-Phraya Nakhon-Prachuap Khiri Khan-Khanom-Kyun Nok Ten-Yao Beach Kantang-Lanta-Krabi-Phuket-Bangsak-Ranong-Phang Nga-Phuket I’m including the route numbers because we didn’t just stick to main roads—day and night. For our sixth trip, we decided to go by car. Car rental for 28 days. Arrival Bangkok, departure Phuket Budget rental in Chiang Rai, Thailand with max insurance Car: Toyota Corolla Altis Total distance: 5,200 km From Bangkok to Chiang Rai with AirAsia. First time driving on the left—got the hang of it quickly, but the windshield wipers and turn signals were tricky since they’re reversed. Pros: even though we had a little fender-bender, the car gave us total freedom with timing, locations, and flexibility. Cons: we drove a bit too much and should’ve spent more time in the north and/or the Gulf. To be continued...

Hi, I did this Phuket/Krabi car rental last year with Thrifty.

No complaints—the staff was friendly… except I had to go ask at Krabi airport where the agent was to drop off the car. They weren’t expecting me… and barely checked the car. All with a smile, though.
