Morocco: Which operator for reliable data connection outside major cities (Atlas, Sahara)?

Hello everyone,

I’m currently planning several trips to Morocco (Marrakech, Draa Valley, Merzouga) and I’m wondering about the reliability of data connections outside major urban centers.

Here’s what I’ve observed on the ground so far: - In cities (Marrakech, Agadir, Fez), 4G is excellent, including in the medina riads. - On the Tizi n'Tichka road and toward Ouarzazate, coverage remains decent, with a few dead spots here and there. - In Saharan areas (Merzouga, Chegaga), the connection becomes patchy: some camps get great reception, others none at all.

My specific questions: 1) On your recent trips, which operator (Maroc Telecom, inwi, Orange) gave you the best coverage in the Atlas and Sahara? 2) Have international eSIMs seemed as reliable as a local Moroccan SIM, or have you noticed a difference in speed in rural areas? 3) While trekking or driving a 4x4 in the desert, have you come across completely dead zones despite theoretical coverage?

I’m happy to share my own coverage notes if it helps, and I’ll gladly answer any questions about Morocco—I know it well.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Best regards, Dennis

Hi there,

For me, it was Maroc Telecom that worked everywhere, whether in the Atlas Mountains or in the Erg Chegaga.

Hello,

Thanks for this on-the-ground feedback—it’s exactly what I’ve noticed too: Maroc Telecom remains the most reliable in remote areas, especially between Tinghir and Merzouga where inwi regularly drops out on the N10.

A useful tip for those planning their trip: in the Erg Chegaga, even Maroc Telecom can be temperamental depending on the camp’s location. Pro tip: ask your bivouac organizer if they have a fixed connection point (some premium camps have dedicated relay antennas).

For the rest of the route (Ouarzazate, Draa Valley, Zagora), I found inwi quite decent in towns and significantly cheaper than Maroc Telecom for moderate use. Maroc Telecom still has the edge as soon as you leave the main roads.

One follow-up question: have you tested Maroc Telecom’s hotspot in the desert? On my end, upload speeds were decent enough to send photos, but I’d love to hear another opinion.

Safe travels for your next adventures!

Oh, reading you, I thought you were planning a trip to Morocco... but apparently, you're selling eSIMs...

Hello,

You’re absolutely right to point that out, and I appreciate your honesty.

To be transparent with you and the community: I do work in the travel eSIM sector (I manage the site Esimrapide), but I’m also a regular traveler to Morocco for several years. The information I shared in this thread about Maroc Telecom’s coverage in the Atlas, the dead zones near Merzouga, or the difference with inwi on the N10 comes from my own field experiences, not a commercial catalog.

I should have clarified this dual role in my first message to avoid any ambiguity, and I apologize for that. My intention wasn’t to do disguised promotion, but to share concrete observations that can help other travelers.

If my contributions on eSIM topics are an issue for the moderation or the community, I fully respect that and will refrain. The forum remains a space for mutual aid among travelers, and that’s its strength.

In the meantime, I’m still available if you or other members have questions about connectivity in Morocco or elsewhere—no commercial agenda, just among fellow travel enthusiasts.

Safe travels for your upcoming trips
