Sewers everywhere...

Good evening!!! ๐
When you travel, do you watch where you step?
A little post for those who aren’t clueless... ๐
1) Florence, Italy
2) Rome, Italy
3) Madrid, Spain
4) Prague, Czech Republic
5) Ljubljana, Slovenia

๐Hi there (given the time)! No, I wasn’t watching where I was stepping, but now I’ll be more careful... Your manhole covers are pretty interesting. Good idea. Capucine18

Domar or dominar o seu coraรงรฃo?
You made me doubt, but it seems like it’s actually "domar" in the original version of the quote...
Is there a Portuguese speaker in the house who could confirm or deny this??? ๐ฎ

Domar exists too. It specifically means to domesticate, to control... so to dominate (dominar). Actually, it's a synonym, but we hear *dominar* more often—I had my doubts too.
For the record, I checked in the *Grande Aurรฉlio XXI*.

I provided the translation of the sentence, but the actual translation from the book *By the River I Sat Down and Wept* (1995) is:
"He who is able to master his heart is able to conquer the world."
Have a great day!

I really like your quote about the after and the before. It reminded me of a little slideshow someone sent me a few days ago—with penguins, I think. It was about some quirks of the French language, like the fact that to have money in front of you, you’ve got to put it on the left.
Best,

“I really like your quote about the after and the before.”
Just a note: these quotes aren’t mine. As for the penguin image, it reminds me of the ostrich—because to hide, it just sticks its head in the hole.
Cheers

Yeah, it kinda shatters the myth, but it’s mentioned in all the good Rome guides ๐ I’ll let you check it out on this SITE, among others, though Wiki downplays it by saying its function is uncertain and it might’ve been a fountain too ๐

Actually, when I visit a major capital, I usually buy a souvenir book full of city photos from the gift shops... a book I hardly ever open after the trip and whose sole purpose is to sit on the bookshelf alongside other similar volumes... ๐
Well, I just flipped through the one I got in Rome, and sure enough, it claims the Bocca della Veritร was originally a fountain or a manhole cover... ๐

After that, all you’ll have left to do is create a website about manhole covers around the world, like Delseve’s one on global signs. More niche as a topic, sure, but way more original too ;)

For Mister Boumbastic, my personal snapshots of the "Bocca della Veritร " during my trip to Rome in the summer of 2008. Unfortunately, when I got there, the gates were closed, so I didn’t get the chance to "test" the legend ๐

Here's my little contribution. Well, to be exact, the photos are from my colleague who just got back from Japan with a few photos of signs for me, but she also has some shots of manhole covers (which she gave me permission to post here, just so you know).
The first one is from Kyoto or Tokyo—needs double-checking. As for the other two, it's written on them: they're from Yokohama.
More should be coming soon.
As for me, I have a few, but they're the ones you've already seen :/

Yeah, it’s kind of a must—when you see the photos, that’s when you realize that in some cities or countries, manhole covers are different, and some are even really beautifully engraved. ๐
Plus, I don’t know if you saw the news a few months ago, but somewhere in France, a gang was stealing manhole covers to sell them to scrap dealers. ๐คช

In the meantime, I can send you one—I took it in Bratislava.
