Steps to recognize a Franco-Thai child?

hi everyone, I’m French and live in France, and my Thai girlfriend just told me she’s pregnant—she lives in Thailand. First step, a paternity test to set my mind at ease. What steps do I need to take to recognize the child? Can I do it before the birth or only after? Where do I need to go, and what paperwork is required?

Just to clarify, I want him to stay in Thailand but be able to come to France anytime without any issues! Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.

I really don’t see how you can recognize a child who isn’t born yet!

If I understood correctly, you’re not going to marry her, so I don’t see how she could come at any time.

It’s completely possible and legal to recognize a child in advance... 😉 Especially at the French embassy in Thailand. 😛 You’ll need a pregnancy certificate for the mother signed by a doctor, your ID card or a French nationality certificate, Madame’s passport or her translated Thai ID, and her translated Thai birth certificate. That’s it! You go to the civil registry service at the Embassy and make your declaration of an unborn child. After the birth, you’ll still need to return to the embassy to declare the day and time of birth and the child’s first name(s)... and you’ll even get a family record book. I did this three years ago, and it was super simple.

However, I don’t know if you can do this in France for a child to be born in Thailand... Ask at your town hall.

Once the child is born, on the same day you declare the birth, you apply for their French passport. They’ll then be able to travel freely between Thailand and France. After that, you apply for their Thai passport, and they’ll be able to travel freely between France and Thailand. 😉

So how does the natural mother appear on the *livret*? If she can’t be listed, are the mother’s documents required?

The child, recognized by the father, can of course come to France.

To register at the embassy, you’ll need the baby’s birth certificate translated...the mother’s name must appear on it.

The mother can apply for a "parent of a French citizen" visa...that’s why recognition and applying for a passport and ID are important. It’s harder to get than a spouse visa, which is almost automatic.......valid for 5 years or the duration of the passport
