Finding gas canisters for small camping stoves in Mexico?

I’m preparing for a trip to Mexico, and we’re planning to do a lot of camping. My question is: What kind of gas canisters can we find (for small camping stoves), and is it easy to get them?

I’m not a camping pro... So to help you out, it’d be great if you could share a photo so I can tell you whether we can find them or not. Camping isn’t very common around here.

Hi there, camping in Mexico isn’t really the norm—you might end up as the curious oddity that all the kids come to check out up close. For gas, Mexico uses the American standard, but I didn’t see small camping canisters, only the big ones. But honestly, why bother cooking in Mexico when the little restaurants are so cheap?

Which part of Mexico?

Wal-Mart is setting up more and more there with the same stock as in the US and Quebec... so you’ll be able to find the small green 1lb canisters there. For a list of campgrounds, grab the guide Mexican Camping by Terry Church via www.amazon.com. They’re mainly designed for RVs, but tents are welcome everywhere....

Hi everyone, I’d like to reopen this thread to see if anyone can update the info on the availability of small gas canisters (standard screw-on base) in Mexico. Specifically along the Mexico City / Gulf of Mexico / Yucatán route. (And even down into Belize and Guatemala.) We’ll be bike touring at a moderate pace, so we’re trying to figure out if finding gas will be rare or, on the contrary, not too much of a hassle. Thanks so much!
