Hiking across Réunion at the end of February

I’m heading to Réunion from February 20 to March 8, and we’ve planned to spend the first 10 days hiking from north to south. But I’m a little worried about the weather. I live in Guadeloupe, so I’m familiar with humid tropical climates, and we’ll obviously be equipped for rain. I don’t mind walking in the rain sometimes, but hiking through clouds all day and seeing nothing—that’s way less exciting!! Of course, I know good weather isn’t guaranteed, but I’d like to be sure it’s not common knowledge among locals that you shouldn’t expect to enjoy the views during this crossing at this time of year!

We’re planning to camp. Again, the weather worries me: setting up the tent every night in the rain and spending the evening inside with gear that never dries—that’d be a bit of a hassle. Is the risk of rain every evening high?

I did this hike too, but in May... from what I remember, it drizzles mostly in the highlands. There are some areas that are rainier than others, but you can tell—the vegetation is unforgettable! (the South, Salazie, some spots in the Plaines, etc.). Often, the names of places are very fitting, so avoid sleeping at Mare à Boue, for example...

Yes, there can be mist, especially in the morning. Places like Maïdo or Piton des Neiges aren’t spared, but unless the weather’s really bad, it usually lifts gently afterward...

You’ll get viewpoints anyway, and some truly spectacular ones... even in uncertain weather.

This island is an amazing place and very different from Guadeloupe. Enjoy it! ;)

If you’re camping, for rainy spots, bring a good sleeping mat and a well-sealed double-roof tent. Sometimes you’ll find makeshift wooden shelters where you can pitch your tent, especially if you’re in a windy area. Otherwise, there’s also a series of mountain huts on the massif. They’re basic, but it’s always nice to find a shower, a bed, and a good plate of rougail now and then. 😉 Normally, you’re supposed to book them, but unless things have changed, phones don’t work up there.

Plan for a solid week to complete the crossing.

It went really well. Just one big downpour for 4 hours where we really struggled. A few short showers that didn’t last long. The weather was more of an issue for doing the helicopter tour—we had to reschedule 3 times because visibility wasn’t good enough.
