Working in Morocco: Documents required at the border

Hi there! I’m a young Malian looking to work in Morocco. Besides a passport, what other documents are required at the **Moroccan** border? Thanks for your help!

However, Morocco practices national preference!! Even for white people!! But sometimes I find them a bit biased when it comes to skin color 😕 But if you have skills that are hard to find in Morocco... go for it!! Best regards,

Yes, absolutely, Emeline. Nationals come first. However, I’d like to work in the informal sector (or with an independent employer). There’s no such thing as a "small job," as they say! Thanks a million!

Actually, there’s a very large Black community in certain Moroccan cities. Beyond students, there are plenty of jobs in call centers because the French level is better than that of Moroccans who didn’t study in French.

That said, if you’re a foreigner, you should avoid informal work at all costs. It’s the quickest way to get deported. Morocco has been implementing a whole set of procedures over the last 3-4 years to crack down on tax fraud. And as a foreigner, you must prove you have income to live in Morocco: - salaried employment - a "formal" business

Anything else means living as an undocumented immigrant, and it’s complicated (see recent events in Oulez Ziane).

For documents, the only real answer you’ll get is from the Moroccan embassy in your country to find out if you need a visa for a "tourist" stay or not. A lot is changing right now, so go straight to the source.

Call centers are essentially in Casablanca.

I’d advise you to refine your project a bit—get in touch with people already expatriated in Morocco. Coming here without any idea of "where, how to work, or how to make a living" is a risky move.

I wish you good luck! There are a few Malian Tuaregs in Morocco who’ve gotten study grants—one of them became a journalist, so you might wanna follow that lead. Another’s studying law in Fez… I’ll try to track them down.
