Family hike on the GR 34 (Brittany)

We started hiking the GR 34 a few years ago. At first, we did short hikes starting from our holiday home. Gradually, we had to drive to the starting point where we’d left off. Two years ago, we set off with our four boys (12, 9, 9, and 4 years old) for a 13-day trip, with 10 days of walking. We went from Pont-Aven to Bénodet (100 km). Challenge accomplished! We were so proud—especially the boys—and rightly so! This summer, we want to continue the adventure. We plan to pick up from Bénodet and go all the way to Pointe du Raz (~130 km). The boys are still motivated, though the youngest is a little less so. But he’ll have time to warm up to the idea. Do you know of any spots along this route (presbytery, bivouac, friends, campsites—but *really* cheap ones) where we can pitch our two small tents? Two years ago, we only stayed at campsites, and in the end, the bill was still pretty steep. We’d like to cut costs as much as possible. Thanks so much for your help! See you soon, Marie

During the summer school holidays, it's tough to find budget-friendly accommodations along the coastal area while staying within the law. Do you know about GCU campgrounds? They're now open to everyone, have stayed basic, and rely on volunteers—check out their website.

Another solution, though a bit of a hassle, is to head a few kilometers inland where prices drop significantly.

Then there's wild camping, but it's mostly banned, and dry summers aren't helping the situation. That means saying goodbye to a refreshing shower.

Bivouacking without a tent—just a tarp or sheet—is usually tolerated and gets around the regulations. It works well in mild regions. After losing our tent (storm) during the Pyrenees crossing (HRP), we did this for about ten days up to 2000 m, so Brittany should be a breeze...

This summer, we spent a family vacation in Plougasnou, camping in the heart of the Bay of Morlaix. As soon as we arrived, the kids had a blast between the Primel-Trégastel beach and the campsite pool. Our mornings were filled with walks along the coastal GR34 trail, with stunning views of the sea and the typical Breton rocks. One of the highlights was our boat trip to the Château du Taureau. The kids loved playing little explorers in this fortress in the middle of the water. We also enjoyed the Morlaix market to discover local specialties, especially crêpes and cider.😉 In the evenings, we gathered around a barbecue at the campsite, enjoying the peace and quiet. A simple trip, but full of memorable moments for the whole family.
