Lyon or Marseille for a train layover?

If you had to book a hotel (arriving in the evening, leaving early the next morning) near a train station, would you choose Lyon Part-Dieu or Marseille Saint-Charles?

The area around Marseille train station isn’t too far from the Old Port. In Lyon, you can also very easily access the city center, the Presqu’île, and the quays along the Rhône and Saône rivers.

If it’s for a good restaurant, Marseille is famous for its local fish specialties, while Lyon is known for its famous *bouchons lyonnais*.

On the other hand, it seems that the area around Lyon’s Part-Dieu station offers a wider choice of hotels in all categories.

Also, note that the security situation is reportedly quite precarious and sensitive in Marseille, particularly around the train station area.

I’ll arrive at 8:30 PM in Lyon, 10:30 PM in Marseille. I need to leave again at 6 or 8 AM the next day. Personally, I’d lean toward the Mediterranean vibe. But I’ll admit I’m a little nervous about wandering around at 11 PM or 11:30 PM (the train will definitely be late!), lugging a suitcase, in a station neighborhood.

In Marseille (terminus station), exit on the left side of the station, and 100 meters away you’ll find the Ibis hotel. You’re not actually in the city—you just walk alongside the station building, it’s not a city street. After that, if you’re feeling nervous, you can grab a bite at the Ibis...

Marseille without a doubt for the change of scenery and the *joie de vivre*! I’d still pick a hotel on the Vieux Port, not far from the station.
