Is Lesotho worth the detour?

I was wondering if Lesotho is really worth the detour. Especially since you have to budget 160 € for tolls.

If you're talking about the rental company's authorization, it's free with some, paid with others, but the price you mentioned is huge.

There’s a small entry tax at the border, but it’s only a few euros.

If you love wild mountain landscapes and observing the daily life of people who still live very differently from us, then absolutely yes.

I did a search for a compact car and here are the conditions with Europcar:

Fees for each crossing: - Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia, Lesotho: 1114 ZAR (1226 ZAR from 01.11.17)

1226 ZAR = 80 € so *2 = 160 €

Maybe I misinterpreted the rental conditions.

The fees are for the car (the authorization letter). Not for the passengers. So just once, not twice.

Also, it's worth checking prices with other rental companies. It might be cheaper or even free.

So it's better to pay 20 € more with one and nothing for the authorization letter than 20 € less but 80 € for that paper with another...

I traveled by rental car and camped in Lesotho.

So I’ll have a hard time telling you if there are any cheap accommodations other than camping.

You should check out Bof’s travel journal. I think that’s the one that’ll give you the most budget insights, even though he traveled by rental car too.
