Hi there, I’m planning a trip to Southeast Asia and would love to do a cruise on the Mekong. The thing is, I’m finding surprisingly little info on the topic—way less than I expected. Especially when it comes to prices, the few times I’ve managed to get a quote without doing a full booking simulation (and even then, I didn’t succeed), the costs seem way too high for me (500 €/night is way out of my budget).

Ideally, I’d love to travel the river cruise by cruise, country by country. 😇

But I’ve heard that even with an unlimited budget, it wouldn’t be possible—if only because of the dams in certain areas. And well, my budget is far from unlimited... 🤪

Cambodia? Yes, please. Laos? Yes, please. 🙂 500 €/day? No way. 🏴‍☠️

I’d like to compare the two destinations in terms of activities, accommodations, and access—the Togians seem gorgeous but very (too?) touristy (lots of resorts and already fully booked for July), while Banggai seems much more off the beaten path. I’d like to add some info about the shrink-wrapping service for luggage at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport in Thailand. The service is available all along the departures terminal (top floor). Some stations also have a luggage scale, while others don’t. A small cutter is provided and inserted into the protective plastic. In February 2026, the cost is 250 baht per bag and 10 baht for weighing. I’ll share some photos.

My mom and I are heading to Indonesia on July 11, 2025, for a month. We’ll spend 15 days in Borneo (Kalimantan) and 15 days in Sulawesi. We’re traveling with backpacks and really want to meet locals and experience their culture. We have a layover in Singapore before flying to Borneo, but we’re not sure yet which part of the island we’d like to land in.

I’m looking for the most up-to-date info possible because our research results are pretty confusing. Initially, we wanted to focus on the Indonesian side of the island, but we’re finding way more info on the Malaysian side (better tourist infrastructure). We’re feeling a bit lost...

Our priority is a 4-5 day trek max. We also want to connect with an English-speaking guide to explore Borneo’s primary forest and its wildlife. Ideally, we’d like to venture into the island’s center. But we might not have the time (given the lack of infrastructure and long distances—we don’t have 15 days just for a trek) or the physical stamina to get there. Still, we’d love to get off the beaten path and avoid pricey, touristy excursions. From our research, we’ve come across 3-day, 2-night trips on longboats or 4x4s (e.g., orangutans in Tanjung Puting) for 400 to 500 €. But that’s way out of our budget, and we think it’s too expensive. We get that as tourists with higher incomes than locals, we should pay more—but there’s a limit, especially compared to the cost of living in Indonesia. We want to avoid tour operators and crowds of tourists. Our goal is to see what’s left of Borneo’s preserved and wild tropical forest and observe animals in their natural habitat. If we don’t see any during a trek, oh well—we’ll take our chances.

On the Malaysian side, there’s Danum Valley, and on the Indonesian side, places like Gunung Palung, Betung Kerihun, and Kayan Mentarang...

Family of 4—2 adults and 2 kids (11 and 15) who are well-traveled. We’re planning a 15-day trip to Indonesia and would love your thoughts on our itinerary. We love discovering local culture, food (!!), seeing beautiful landscapes, and keeping an active pace. We’re not the type to lounge on the beach for 5 hours or spend ages by the pool when we’re halfway across the world. Also, we try to avoid places "ruined" by mass tourism (like Holbox in Mexico, which we loved 10 years ago but not at all on our last visit, or Phi Phi in Thailand, completely destroyed by mass tourism).

Special note: we love traveling by train :)

Hi there, We're heading to Thailand with our two kids (9 years old) for two weeks next February (2026). We plan to rent a car to stay independent and explore a bit off the beaten path. Still, we'd like to spend 1 or 2 nights on a nice, quiet island—just for some relaxation and especially snorkeling (even though I know it's not the best country for beautiful corals).

I've read dozens of forum pages and travel journals, but I'm still overwhelmed and can't decide where to go for a peaceful paradise-like beach with good snorkeling opportunities. We don’t need comfort—Robinson Crusoe-style camping or hammock nights work perfectly for us. No electricity or signal is totally fine. We just don’t want to pay 1000 € for a family of four to go to the Surin Islands, even if they do look like paradise.

Any suggestions?

I’ve been wrestling with this question for weeks now: Flores or Sulawesi?

I’m leaving in July for 24 days, followed by 2 weeks around Makassar/Wakatobi for work. For the first part, I’m traveling with my family (my partner + 3 kids aged 6 to 14).

I’ve had a long-time dream of Komodo, but I’m worried it’s become super touristy... though the crossing to Maumere still sounds amazing. I’m also not thrilled about all the internal flights.

On the other hand, since I’ll be in Sulawesi anyway, I’m thinking a crossing from Gorontalo to Luwuk via the Togians (maybe even a few days in Banggai) + a detour to Toraja (which I visited 10 years ago) could be an incredible trip too.

For my family, this is their first trip to Indonesia, so I’d love it to feel *mythic* ;).

Any advice is welcome—I’m really struggling to decide! I know it’s a choice between two great options...

While our next trip is still just an idea, I wanted to check out what accommodations are available in the Philippines. I’m a bit put off by what I found—I think it’s really expensive and it’s not exactly dreamy! We’re not into staying in dorms with shared bathrooms anymore, but in Asia and South America, we’ve always found charming little places for around 30 € a night. Is that impossible in the Philippines? Are there other sites besides Booking to look at? Thanks for your tips!

Hi, In February, we’d like to visit the Xeo Quyt forest site. On the LP (Lonely Planet), it’s listed near Cao Lanh, but when I look at the map, it seems much closer to Sa Dec. Since we’re planning to stop in Sa Dec during our trip, I’d love to know if there are buses to get to Xeo Quyt. What’s your take on the site itself?

Also, while we’re in HCMC, we’re thinking of doing a "day trip" to the Cu Chi tunnels. I’ve read reviews about Ben Dinh, but almost nothing about Ben Duoc (except that it’s less touristy!). Which one should we choose? Do agencies offer tours to Ben Duoc?

I’m planning and organizing a wonderful trip to Vietnam from mid-March to mid-April 2026, traveling independently for a month with my wife to enjoy her new retirement. Here’s a summary of our itinerary: We arrive in Ho Chi Minh City on the morning of Wednesday, March 18, and depart from Hanoi on the evening of Thursday, April 16. First, I’d like to head to Ho Chi Minh City because the temperatures are high in that region in mid-March. After that, we’ll visit Phu Quoc Island and then the Mekong Delta. We’ll return to Ho Chi Minh City and take a flight to Hue for 2 days, then Tam Coc / Ninh Binh (2-3 days), and Cat Ba Island with a visit to Lan Ha Bay (4 days). We’ll spend a few days in Hanoi, followed by 3-4 days in Sapa with some hikes, and then the Ha Giang loop (4 days). (I’m a motorcyclist—I ride a BMW trail bike and have taken care of renewing my international license.) We’re considering renting a motorcycle or bicycles when needed, except in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The weather in northern Vietnam in early April should theoretically be decent. Finally, we’ll return to Hanoi before heading back to Paris and the Pays de la Loire. Unfortunately, I’m skipping Angkor in Cambodia. I’d like to have a guide for 1 or 2 days in Sapa (which typical agency would you recommend?), and I’m wondering if I should book an agency for the 4 days in Ha Giang. I prefer my independence and don’t really like the "group" aspect of agencies. I’ll rent a 150cc motorcycle, and my wife will ride with me. Other questions: What are some good, typical accommodations to book in the places we’ve identified? Thanks for any info. Did I forget anything, or should we adjust our itinerary? Hi fellow travelers! I’m planning a little 3-week trip to Vietnam in mid-to-late March. It’ll probably be the only time I can go. I enjoyed Thailand but clearly preferred Laos—it was calmer. For Vietnam, I don’t have a precise idea of what I want to see yet, and I’m the type to improvise a bit once I’m there. I’m not super adventurous but I’m curious, and I prefer street food over restaurants, markets and off-the-beaten-path villages over big attractions. But I don’t want to miss the must-sees either. So, given that I’ll only be there for 3 weeks, I’m wondering: should I absolutely stick to either the north or the south? Or is it possible to have a nice, not-too-hectic trip by spending, say, one week in the south and two in the north?... (I’d take a multi-city flight for arrival and departure) What do you think? Hi there, Big travel year in Asia for me. I’m heading to Southeast Asia for a month in mid-July. The dates aren’t flexible since I’m going primarily for a wedding (Laos). So, I’ll start my trip in Laos for 4 days, then head off... where?

I’ve already done a trip exclusively in Laos a few years ago. I also visited Vietnam for the second time last year, so I’d love to explore something new. I was thinking of Cambodia (but only for Angkor) and northern Thailand, which I haven’t seen yet (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Phrae, Phayao, Pa Hin Ngam National Park), and wrapping up with a few nights in Koh Samui. My question is about the weather. From what I’ve seen, Koh Samui seems to be spared during this period. But for Angkor and northern Thailand, I’m not so sure—it feels like a gamble. And I’m really not in the mood for rainy vacations, since I already get enough gray skies where I live 😅.

So, I had another idea: after Laos, I could head to Bali (or another Indonesian island) where it’s supposedly the right season. The flight ticket price is exactly the same, including a one-way to Bali and the return from Bali (with a layover in Bangkok). For those who’ve traveled in July, what do you think? Is there a big risk in trying northern Thailand and Angkor?
