What to combine with Atacama for a two-week trip?
by Yothope · 2025-10-28 · 2 replies
Hello everyone, I'm just starting to plan a two-week trip I'd like to take with my wife in early May. This trip would include the Atacama Desert, which I was lucky enough to visit alone once and would love to experience again with her. But I'd like to add one or two other places to visit, keeping in mind that we're much more into nature than cities. I was thinking about part of adjacent Bolivia... but since we'll have already seen quite a few stunning high-altitude lakes around Atacama, what would be some interesting and very different spots? We would have loved to include Peru as well, but it might be tricky to combine in just two weeks. I'll go through the many posts on this forum, but if any of you have some tempting ideas for this time of year (late April - early May), I'm all ears. Thanks! :)

by Fabiemoreau · 2025-10-19 · 3 replies
Hi! We’re planning to spend a month (February or March 2026) in southern Chile, starting from Santiago (Lake District, Torres del Paine Park, Punta Arenas). Can we do this itinerary by car, or do we need to take internal flights? Has anyone done this trip and can give us some tips? Thanks! Fabienne and Jérôme

Climbing Villarrica Volcano with a Minor (16 years old)
by Davacer · 2025-09-25 · 1 reply
Hello everyone, This coming November, I’ll be joining my family who lives in Villarrica, and I’d love to take the opportunity to climb the volcano. I’ve been dreaming of doing it with my 16-year-old little brother, who’s in excellent physical shape and very athletic. However, after checking out the "reputable" booking sites, I noticed that most guides systematically refuse anyone under 18, with no possibility of an exception—even though I’d be fully prepared to take full responsibility. I think that’s really too bad. Do any of you know if there are any serious agencies or guides who accept young people who are at least 16? Your feedback or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much! 😊
Buying a SIM card at Santiago Airport?
by Ysa59 · 2025-09-12 · 3 replies
Hi, we're heading to Chile soon and need physical SIM cards (not eSIMs). Is it possible to buy them at Santiago Airport? We’ll have a few hours layover before our flight to Easter Island but not enough time to go downtown. Thanks for your tips!
Is it risky to do an excursion from San Pedro de Atacama to the Salar de Uyuni? (Altitude Sickness)
by Fanniegge · 2025-09-09 · 1 reply
Hello, We’re planning a trip to Chile for next December (2025) as a family with our two kids (6 and 8 years old). We’ve scheduled a week in San Pedro to take our time exploring the area, and we’re wondering whether to extend into Bolivia to see the Salar de Uyuni, the Laguna Verde and Laguna Colorada, the Desert of Dalí, etc.—basically the short loop that a lot of tour operators offer. What’s making me hesitate is the altitude—there are stretches at 5,000 meters, and I’m wondering if that’s too risky for the kids, since the risk of AMS (acute mountain sickness) is high at that elevation. Has anyone here done this loop with their kids? If so, could you share your experience? Thanks so much!
Booking bus tickets to Valparaiso
by Zetwal60 · 2025-09-07 · 5 replies
Hi there,

Assuming our flight takes off, we’re leaving on September 10th... On the 30th, we need to go to Valparaiso by bus—round trip in one day. I tried booking tickets on either Turbus or Pullman from the Alameda station, but neither site lets us enter our nationality because it’s not listed in the dropdown. Is it really necessary to book the bus tickets online, or can we just grab them the morning of—or even 48 hours ahead at the station? Thanks! Odile

Hi there, We’re planning a trip to Chile this coming August and would love to head down to Chiloé. We’ve heard that as we go further south at this time of year, the weather gets pretty rough. What’s the weather like in Chiloé in late August/early September? What activities can we do? And which ones become really tricky because of the weather? Thanks in advance for your tips! Marie

Hi there, Our departure is coming up soon... Since we’ll be mostly in the San Pedro de Atacama area and Chilean Patagonia, is it better to bring only Chilean pesos or is it wise to also take some US dollars? Thanks! Odile
Your tips for cycling from Santiago (Chile) to Mendoza (Argentina) in November
by Clementinho · 2025-07-29 · 5 replies
Hi everyone,

I’m heading to Chile this coming November and I’d love to spend a few days cycling from Santiago (Chile) to Mendoza (Argentina).

Has anyone done this route before? If so, do you have any tips (stages, gear, accommodation spots, etc.)?

Also, to avoid carrying too much stuff, I’d like to rent a bike in Santiago. Any recommendations for a good rental shop?

Thanks so much in advance for your help :)

5 days in Valparaiso and Santiago: sightseeing and accommodation tips
by Foxpyzy · 2025-07-18 · 5 replies
Hello everyone, we’re finishing a cruise from Marseille to Valparaiso on the morning of December 23, and we’re flying out of Santiago on the 27th around noon. What do you recommend we visit in such a short time, and how? Do you also have any tips for accommodation? We were thinking of spending 2 days in Valparaiso and 2 days in Santiago. And what about transportation between the two cities? A little detail: We’re an older couple, 80 and 81 years old! We still walk well, but we’re not polyglots. Luckily, we’ll have Google Translate and an eSIM card! This trip is kind of our 60th wedding anniversary. Thanks to everyone. Mado and Maurice.
Amazing apartment location right in the heart of Santiago!
by MrSoyouz · 2025-07-11 · 0 replies
Hello travelers who’ve chosen Chile as your destination! 🙂

I’m offering a stay in Santiago, in a central neighborhood where metro lines 3 and 5 intersect—perfect for exploring the Chilean capital.

For couples, this beautifully decorated studio with a breathtaking view of the Andes is a must-see: airbnb.cl/h/indiana-homes-busta1504

For families up to 4 people, this 2-bedroom apartment is fully equipped: airbnb.cl/h/indiana-homes-busta609

These are two apartments in a modern building inaugurated in 2024, right across from Plaza del Parque Bustamante. Prime location with direct access to Irarrázaval metro station (lines 3 and 5), surrounded by cafés, shops, and just a 5-minute walk from Barrio Italia—a must-visit! !
Registering your mobile phone before traveling to Chile
by Zetwal60 · 2025-07-07 · 4 replies
Hi there,

I recently saw that you need to register your phone on a specific website one week before leaving.

Since the trip will last less than a month, is this necessary, please?

Also, do I need to do this only for the phone that will have a local SIM card? Or do I also need to do it for my phone that will probably have an eSIM?

With a local SIM or eSIM, will we still be able to use our French SIM card with an international plan?

Thanks,

Odile
Travel companion with no time constraints for Peru/Chile
by Yllen13 · 2025-05-26 · 17 replies
Hello, I’m a young, active retiree looking for someone to join me in Latin America without the obligation of being together 24/7. I’m leaving on 25/09 for Cusco in Peru, then planning to head down to Chile. If the date is too soon, we could meet up there instead.

I used to travel independently with my partner. We’ve been to Peru, Bolivia twice, Guatemala, Ecuador, Cuba, Ethiopia…

Now, I’m on my own and would prefer to share the experience rather than travel solo. I last visited Peru 13 years ago, so I’m excited to revisit it and explore it differently this time. If you’re interested… see you soon! Brigitte

Issue crossing the Chile-Bolivia border by motorcycle
by Coco13fr · 2025-05-03 · 1 reply
Hi everyone,

I’m currently on a motorcycle trip through South America. I’m riding a Honda XR 150L registered in Chile, which I bought in my name. I have my Chilean RUT and the *padrón* (vehicle registration) for the bike. I’m traveling solo and planning to visit the Salar de Uyuni, Cusco, and Machu Picchu before returning to Santiago in the next 60 days.

I tried crossing the border at Ollagüe, but I was denied entry into Bolivia even though I have all the necessary paperwork. The customs officers told me I needed to be a Chilean resident to enter with a Chilean-registered motorcycle, which I’m not (I only have the RUT).

I’m looking for: -A more flexible alternative to cross into Bolivia (or even Argentina or Peru if necessary). -Recent experiences from other travelers who entered Bolivia with a Chilean-registered motorcycle. -Possible solutions (additional documents? international insurance? special visa or permit?).

I’m open to adjusting my itinerary, but I’d really like to continue the trip with my motorcycle. Thanks in advance for any help or advice! !
