😉Hi there, A few months ago, CFC put the EN VOGUE experience on sale, departing from Dunkirk. I booked this package to test the boat and onboard services for myself. I’d read a lot of reviews mentioning numerous issues on board, so I wanted to see for myself what it was really like…

Okay, I’ll stop rambling… The package included boarding at 6 PM on Friday, dinner, a show, an overnight stay, and breakfast. We chose an interior cabin for this experience—since the boat wasn’t leaving the dock, we didn’t see the point in paying more… All in all, it cost 130 € per person. My mom joined us; she got the same cabin for 130 € with no single occupancy supplement.

We’d checked in online to board faster. We took the train to DUNKIRK, then a taxi to the shuttle pavilion—7 € for the ride. When we arrived at the pavilion, we were told to wait because there was a connection issue with check-in. Great start… After about ten minutes, we were finally allowed to proceed. At the counter, they said they didn’t have our cabin cards and no record of our check-in… Very odd. With no solution, they put us on the bus and said we’d sort it out at reception. Perfect. We went through security, and they confiscated our water bottles—never seen that before! Then they said my mom had a corkscrew in her bag, so they searched it… but there was no corkscrew. Total amateur hour… They eventually dropped it.

We got on the bus for a ten-minute ride… We boarded the ship with a crew member and headed to reception. Turns out, we weren’t the only ones in this situation. The nightmare began… Only two staff members were handling all the issues, and everything seemed complicated. They told my mom her cabin had been given to someone else 😲. That was the last straw…

It took forever—they had to redo the entire check-in. Finally, they told my mom her cabin was good to go; they’d mixed her up with someone else… After a solid half-hour, we could finally head to our cabin.

I’m determined to test everything: the pool, jacuzzi, show, restaurant, spa, etc… TO BE CONTINUED

Hi there, We’d like to visit Vietnam during the visa exemption period (45 days), and our flight ticket is already booked. After that, we plan to head to Cambodia via the fast boat from Chau Doc and return to Belgium from Cambodia. I don’t think we can buy the boat ticket from here. Do you think this is doable? I’m worried about potential issues at boarding in Brussels if I don’t have proof of leaving Vietnam after the 45 days. Thanks for your advice!

Hi, I’m traveling from Paris to Tokyo with a connection in Hanoi. My layover isn’t long (1h45), so I’m a bit stressed about missing my second flight to Tokyo. So I have a couple of questions: 1) Will my luggage go straight through, or do I need to collect it? 2) Do I have to go through everything again (customs, security, etc.)?

Just to clarify, my Paris-Tokyo ticket is with Vietnam Airlines.

Gosuslugi / Госуслуги is the Russian administrative portal. EBS / ЕБС is the unified biometric system.

Since 2025, foreigners (residents or not) must have a biometric profile in addition to a Gosuslugi profile to obtain SIM cards and open a bank account.

Administrative services are mostly centralized in MFCs, МФЦ (Multi-Functional Center), nicknamed "My Documents" Мои документы.

A non-resident foreigner can register with the pension fund, which provides a social security number, SNILS / СНИЛС. To do this, you must present your passport and a notarized translation at an MFC. The SNILS can be issued on the spot or within a maximum of five days. If not issued immediately, you receive a receipt, and the deadline is communicated by the administrative agent. You return to the MFC after the deadline to collect the certificate with the SNILS.

Once the SNILS is obtained, you revisit an MFC counter to register on the Gosuslugi portal. You must present your passport and notarized translation again, along with a phone number and email. The Gosuslugi portal authenticates users with three pieces of data: SNILS, email or phone number, and password. The agent creates the profile and completes the initial email and SMS confirmations on your phone.

After the Gosuslugi profile is active, you register on the biometric portal. If last year’s law centralization measures are fully implemented, you can do this at any MFC; otherwise, you go to a SBERBANK (or VTB) branch. Again, as always for foreigners, you must present your passport with its translation and show your open Gosuslugi profile on your phone. The employee records your voice (reading a series of numbers) and takes a photo of your face.

After that, you can go to a telecom agency to buy a SIM card. The staff will take your passport details with the translation and your Gosuslugi profile info. Then, they’ll take a photo with their webcam, which is verified by the online EBS biometric portal. However, procedures may vary depending on the provider (Megafon, MTS, Beeline), and some employees may not be familiar with the process.

Potential delays can be caused by network maintenance or slowdowns due to peaks in administrative activity.

I’ll illustrate this process as I experienced it in February and April 2025 in the next post. Just need to gather the photos I took on the spot.

This afternoon I had a flight at 5:10 PM to Amsterdam from Nice (final destination: Berlin). I arrived at the airport a little before 3:00 PM and saw that the flight was now leaving at 6:30 PM. I went to the counter to point out that I wouldn’t have time to make my connection, and they told me I’d be spending the night in Amsterdam.

When the agent checked her computer, she saw that I’d been put on a flight with another airline and asked if I hadn’t received an email.

In the end, I had to change terminals and leave at 7:05 PM with Swiss Airlines, then Air Baltic.

Just to clarify, I checked in less than 24 hours ago for both KLM flights (Nice-Amsterdam and Amsterdam-Berlin) where I had seats assigned. I checked my emails carefully, and I was never notified!

Luckily, the Swiss Airlines flight left later—otherwise, at 3:00 PM, I wouldn’t have had time to check in (I have a checked bag), and I don’t know how I would’ve proven I never got an email. Also, thankfully, I went to the counter much earlier than planned for the 6:30 PM departure.

In the end, I was lucky because with KLM, I would’ve lost a whole day. And it’s a good thing I always travel for at least two full weeks because I’ve often lost a day due to delays—I wouldn’t do that for a week or a weekend getaway...

This is the first time this has happened to me, but there’s a first time for everything!

I’m flying to Bogotá with a one-way ticket in early January. A friend told me that I’ll likely have trouble boarding in France if I can’t show a return (or onward) flight out of Colombia. He was in the same situation but from the US and had to buy one at the airport before leaving.

So, I’m thinking of buying a ticket that I can get refunded once I’m there. Are there still airlines that offer full refunds without any reason? Is there a legal timeframe within which I can do this?

Hi everyone,

I booked a flight to Bali in December through an online travel agency. I received my reservation number but not the e-ticket, so I wanted to check everything on the airline’s website (Qatar Airways).

On the airline’s site, for each of my flights, I see the status "confirmed" and an e-ticket number. However, I can’t generate the ticket. Should I be able to generate it, or are the e-ticket numbers enough?

Also, when I check the passenger information, the "title" field is grayed out and can’t be completed, even though it’s marked as mandatory. Is this a problem? Can I wait until check-in at the airport? Should I contact the agency or Qatar Airways?

Hi, We arrive in Johannesburg (Tambo) at 8:30 in the morning. Do you think we’ll have enough time to catch the 10:30 flight to Hoedspruit, or is it better to play it safe and take the next one at 11:40? Hi there, During our Thailand trip, we're planning to arrive in Bangkok and then head up to Chiang Mai. So far, so good. But after that, we'd like to go to the islands—either Krabi or Koh Samui. However, the flights listed on 12go.asia seem complicated, with a layover of about 1 hour in Bangkok where we'd have to collect our luggage and check in for the second flight. That feels way too tight.

Hi there, I’d like to know if it’s possible to catch a 9:00 AM flight to Lombok with Air Asia after landing in Kuala Lumpur at 6:10 AM from Paris with Malaysia Airlines (we don’t have checked baggage, but our tickets are separate, so we’ll need to go through immigration). Same question for the return: arriving in Kuala Lumpur at 9:20 PM from Lombok and departing for Paris at 11:40 PM. I’ve read that the two airlines are in different terminals at the airport. The other option is to take flights with a 7- to 8-hour layover. What do you think is better? Thanks!

Hello, We’re traveling as a family to China this summer, from late July to late August. However, my kids’ passports expire at the end of January 2026, which means they’ll have about 5 months of validity left after our departure. Many travel agencies recommend having more than 6 months of validity! I haven’t found any official information about this requirement. As a precaution, the best thing would be to renew them, but before I realized this, I bought domestic flight tickets using their current passport numbers. Hi there, I bought a ticket for a flight from Toulouse to Mauritius through the Go to Gate agency. The flight leaves Toulouse with Air France, then has a layover in Paris before continuing to Mauritius with Air Mauritius. Unfortunately, I made a typo in my partner’s name. The travel agency won’t correct it, even though Air Mauritius doesn’t see a problem—but they won’t send an email to authorize the change either. They say it’s up to Go to Gate to handle it. Just so you know, the airline can’t modify the name themselves; according to them, it’s Go to Gate’s responsibility to make the change.

Trip with “assistance” – we just got back from a Brest/BKK round-trip in business class with Air France, and the assistance went really smoothly, both in PAR and BKK. But at an outrageous price: over 4,000 € per person. Next time, in November, we’re going with Thaiways, departing from PAR.

Question: if I book Brest/PAR with Air France and then BKK with Thai, will the assistance system still work between the two airlines?

Hi, I just had a really bad experience leaving for Thailand with Etihad Airways, along with my partner and her 11-year-old son. We were denied boarding because the child’s passport was invalid (by about 3 days), as it’s indeed required to have 6 months of validity. But come on—just 3 days over! On top of that, we were able to check in online for our round-trip flight (just the flights, no extras), entered our passport numbers and expiry dates, and even had to check in online again 30 hours before departure, where we got our boarding passes without any issues. How is it possible that no one called, warned, or even blocked us online? Instead, they waited to tell us at the airport during baggage check-in. I’ve asked the airline for a full refund of our expenses—do I have any chance? Thanks for your help

We’re heading to Chile in September 2025, and we booked a Paris–Santiago flight (AF) that was supposed to arrive in Santiago at 7:45 AM, with a same-day connection to Calama on LATAM at 2 PM. Air France just changed the arrival time to 8:45 AM in Santiago. Do you think we’ll still have enough time for the connection to Calama, or should we change our 2 PM flight to one the next morning? The other same-day options are too late. How long should we budget for customs, health checks, and baggage claim—since we’ll need to recheck our bags for Calama?

Is moving between the international terminal and the domestic terminal time-consuming?

Hello soon-to-be retired travelers flying from Orly to Fort-de-France! We’re taking the transatlantic cruise on the Virtuosa, which departs from Fort-de-France on Saturday, April 5th and arrives in Le Havre on Sunday, April 20th. Are excursions possible without necessarily going through MSC for Guadeloupe, St. Martin, the Azores, and Lisbon? We’re planning a one-month trip to China, which matches the 30-day visa on arrival, but with a return ticket from Vietnam. For example, we’d arrive in Chengdu, then travel via Lao Cai to Vietnam, and fly back to Paris CDG from Hanoi 45 days later. Do you think this could be an issue at boarding?

Second option: arrive in Chengdu (*30-day visa duration*), then fly from Kunming to Hanoi 45 days later (Vietnam visa duration), and return to Paris CDG from Hanoi. Thanks for your input!

Usually, I never include one, but this time I wanted to add my partner’s middle name—and instead of putting it on his ticket, I put it on mine. So now I have an incorrect middle name (a male one, no less!). Otherwise, the first and last names are correct. Do you think this could cause a problem, given that the middle name is optional? While applying for an e-visa, we just realized that both our passports won’t be valid for 6 months after our stay ends, which is a key requirement for getting a Cambodian visa. I don’t know how, but we totally missed this info!! Our tickets aren’t refundable, and we’ve booked several non-refundable hotels there too...

Hi everyone, I’m sharing my travel journal from Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic) in January 2020. We wanted to escape the rain, gloom, and cold of France—and we got *some* rain and storms, but also warmth!

DOMINICA A small Caribbean island of 754 km², located between Guadeloupe and Martinique, Dominica is part of the Commonwealth. Roseau is its capital. The locals speak English and Creole. The currency is the East Caribbean Dollar (EC$). In October 2019, we decided to visit this little paradise from January 9 to 24, 2020—14 nights on the island. We traveled as two couples. Flight booking with Air Caraïbes: Orly Terminal 4 to Pointe-à-Pitre by plane, then P-à-P to Roseau with L’Express des Îles (boat) for the outbound trip. Marigot to Pointe-à-Pitre to Orly (all by plane on the return). Air Caraïbes: navigAir: plane + shuttle + boat. They handle everything, even delays. A shuttle waits for us at the airport to take us to the boat.

Accommodation bookings: 7 nights on the Caribbean coast in Salisbury (Sunset Bay Club), 4 nights on the Atlantic coast in Taberi La Plaine (Citrus Creek Plantation), and 3 nights in Marigot (Hibiscus Valley Inn). Car rental booked (Courtesy Rental Car).

Thursday, January 9 8:00 AM: Orly Airport, baggage drop-off—we checked in 48 hours earlier. Scheduled takeoff at 11:10 AM. Arrival in P-à-P at 2:30 PM local time after a 7-hour, 50-minute flight. We collect our luggage, and a shuttle is waiting to take us to the dock for L’Express des Îles. We check in, and a big storm hits P-à-P. Scheduled departure at 5:00 PM for a 2-hour, 20-minute crossing. Lots of waves—many passengers got seasick during the trip. Arrival in Roseau at 7:30 PM. We go through customs. Some clementines to declare… which they confiscated! A taxi takes us to the car rental: Courtesy. The ride is covered by the rental company. We get an automatic. You need a special permit to drive in Dominica (12 €, issued by the rental company). And remember—driving is on the left! It’s dark, and we have a good hour’s drive to reach our hotel. First intersection, headlights coming toward us, honking… we’re on the wrong side—driving on the left, remember? Most roads are in poor condition, narrow, with few signs and little to no street lighting. The island was hit by Tropical Storm Erika in 2015 and Hurricane Maria in September 2017, causing major damage. We finally arrive in Coulibistrie at Sunset Bay Club at 9:30 PM. The owner welcomes us, warms up some bread and cheese, and offers us four beers. We have pâté, sausage, and chips—we have a little picnic on the terrace of our bungalow. We have two adjoining rooms. It’s 11:00 PM when we go to bed… and it’s raining.

Friday, January 10 After a hearty breakfast (French toast or pancakes, jams, fresh juice, coffee or tea, eggs-bacon-cheese, bread, fresh fruit), the sun and rain take turns freely. We head north. Colihaut: a short walk through the village—we’re the only tourists. Portsmouth: lunch on Purple Turtle Beach at Sea Bird Bar and Grill (grilled fish, fries, salad, and the local beer: Kubuli). Then we visit Fort Shirley, part of Cabrits National Park. We do the yellow trail and part of the blue one. We buy a week-long pass, useful for some visits (no entry fee). On the way back, we stop at the market to buy some fruit. We arrive at Sunset in time to watch the sunset over the Caribbean Sea. All day, showers and sunshine.

Au moment de Noël 2019, c'est l'occasion de me faire un cadeau. Je fouille une nouvelle fois dans mes rêves d'enfant et l'Abyssinie sort de mon chapeau. Toute la magie à l'évocation de ce nom me revient en pleine face : Les hauts plateaux, le loup, la reine Saba, Salomon, Lalibela, l'homme aux semelles de vent ... Et puis je ne suis plus allé en Afrique depuis 2011. Cela me manque. C'est décidé, j'irai en Ethiopie avant la saison des pluies. Je peux poser 2 semaines de vacances après le 7 mars.

Je me rapproche d'une agence avec qui je définis un itinéraire classique dans le Nord du Pays qui sera affiné grâce aux renseignements et conseils glanés sur ce forum. Je précise que je me mets bien avec un 4x4, un chauffeur et un guide francophone.

Le 9 mars, je suis donc à CDG dans la file d'enregistrement du vol Ethiopian Airlines avec mon sac léger : quelques affaires, quelques médicaments, du saucisson sec et des pastilles Ricola à l'orange, le livre l'Abyssin de Ruffier, le guide Olizane, et mon smartphone ( je regrette de ne pas avoir pris un vrai appareil photo !!!) . J'ai aussi un bon paquet de tshirt et sweat, des paquets de stylos qui alourdissent mon bagage mais qui feront nombre d'heureux sur les routes des hauts plateaux.



Le 10 mars au petit matin, après avoir changé des euros au rutilant terminal international de l'aéroport d'Adis , je rejoins le terminal des vols domestiques, moins rutilant. Je cherche un peu pour rejoindre ce terminal, je repasse par les contrôles de sécurité par lesquels je viens de passer mais cette fois ci à l'envers.



Et j'attends mon vol pour Lalibela. Attendre, c'est aussi ce que j'aime en Afrique, cette conception du temps tellement différente de la notre. Je m'y cale rapidement et éprouve une certaine joie à contempler tantôt le monde extérieur, tantôt mon monde intérieur. Je dois contempler trop longtemps une jolie jeune fille. Quelques minutes après, elle vient briser mon silence et s’asseoir à coté de moi. La salle d'embarquement se vide, le vol pour Baher Dar va décoller. Ma jolie voisine reste, elle habite Lalibela et va prendre comme moi le prochain vol.
