Temperatures in South Africa in August
Hi there,
We’re heading to South Africa in August, with a basic itinerary: Johannesburg, Kruger Park, and finishing up in Cape Town. My question—I know it’s winter there—what are the temperatures like? How should we dress? Thanks for your tips!

Consent Letter for Traveling with a Child to Quebec
Hi,
I’m traveling with my 6-year-old daughter this summer, and since her father hasn’t seen her in 3 months, he won’t be able to sign a travel consent form for me.
He’s been completely out of touch since early March, and I have no idea where he is.
We’re heading to Montreal for 2 weeks in early July—I have both the outbound and return tickets.
Am I required to provide a signed consent letter from the father, even though she’s traveling with a parent who has legal custody?
If I don’t have one but can prove my good faith—explaining that he’s completely unreachable—will that be enough?
Thanks for your help!
Which company has air-conditioned buses in Kerala?
Hi there,
I’m heading to Kerala in December. I’ve been searching without luck for air-conditioned buses, minivans—basically anything that’s not a bus without AC or windows, since my route from Cochin to Munnar is gonna be a long one and I don’t wanna struggle.
I checked around, and it’s crazy—you can’t find the name of a single private company, just overpriced transfers!
From what I can tell, it seems like there’s nothing but local buses… yet I went to Sri Lanka two years ago and there were plenty of options.
Thanks in advance for any tips! Caroline

Partying in Novalja from June 19 to 23, 2025
Hey everyone! 👋
A group of friends and I are heading to Novalja for the 3rd time to party—it’s like the little Ibiza 😄. If anyone’s around and wants to join us for some fun, you’re more than welcome! We’re pretty chill and up for a good time 😆. Pool parties in the afternoon, and we usually keep the vibe going at night 😉.

The Frenchies in the Americas - 4 months with the family (Part 1)
We decided to leave.
To drop everything and try the adventure. The real deal? Not quite. We did some planning, skimmed through travel guides, and booked 4 nights.
But most importantly, we have a return flight.
The adventure has an end date. Like in any neat story, the parenthesis will close. The memory-making machine will run, feeding us for a while. For a long time, we hope. Helping us grow. But we know the machine will stop, leaving its faint scent lingering in our orderly lives, like a footprint in the sand.

Visiting Koh Yao Noi during Ramadan
Hi there,
I’m planning our trip to Thailand in February–March 2026 during school holidays. We’ll be spending 3 nights on Koh Yao Noi, which is a Muslim island, and it’ll be Ramadan. Has anyone been there during this period? If so, can we eat at midday or will everything be closed? Thanks in advance!
Where to stay in the Cirque de Mafate?
We're heading back to Réunion on Wednesday, April 30th, and we'd like to spend 2 or 3 days in the Cirque de Mafate.
Can you recommend a nice gîte where it'd be pleasant to stay, with a warm welcome and good meals?
We're planning to get there by helicopter.
What do you think? We're interested if you've got another great tip!
Safari in February-March: alternatives to Southern Tanzania?
Hi there,
We’d like to do a fly-in safari in February or March 2026 in Southern Tanzania’s parks (Nyerere—formerly Selous—and Ruaha...).
Why this choice? Because we’ve already been lucky enough to visit the northern parks in Tanzania.
Why this time of year? Because it’ll be my birthday (a big one!).
Now, some agencies are strongly advising against this February-March period. Has anyone had experience with a safari during this time?
Otherwise, where should we go for a safari in February-March? Just a heads-up—we already have "quite a bit of experience" in East and Southern Africa and love trying new things. https://www.youtube.com/@lolodetoul54
Thanks, fellow Africa fans!

Oman with a one-year-old in September: feasible or not?
Hello,
We’d like to travel to Oman in September for about two weeks. Our baby will be one year old then, and I’m wondering if the heat might still be too stifling at that time of year. What do you think?
Do you know if it’s easy to find baby food jars and diapers there?
We’re open to any feedback in general about a road trip with a little one if some of you have done it 😊
On another note, I see that a lot of sites recommend a 4x4. Do you think it’s really a must? I’m worried it’ll blow our budget… If you have a car rental company to recommend, we’d love to hear about it!
Thanks so much, and have a great day! ☀️☀️

Combining Temples of the Sun/Moon, Bentonite Hills, Factory Butte, and Moonscape Overlook
Hi there,
I’d planned to visit Cathedral Valley, Goblin Valley, the Burr Trail/Northom loop, Factory Butte, and Moonscape Overlook, as well as the Capitol Reef scenic route over three days. The scenic Highway 12 would be for the following days.
Since I rented an AWD SUV, I was planning to contact an outfitter for Cathedral Valley, but they suggested that instead of doing Cathedral Valley with them and the rest solo, they could take me to the four most relevant sites mentioned in the title. Their plan is to start at sunrise at either Temples of the Sun/Moon or Moonscape Overlook and then hit the other three afterward. What do you think? Thanks! Louis

Driving to Senegal with 2 dogs
Hi everyone, I’d like to travel to Senegal with my two dogs—an Amstaff and a French Bulldog (who can’t fly). I’m wondering if you think it’ll be complicated or if the formalities are easy to sort out.
I’m giving myself a year to prepare for this trip.

18-day road trip from Salt Lake City to San Francisco
Hi there,
We’re planning a trip in August 2025 with two kids (8 and 11 years old) in a camper van through the American West.
Any tips for renting a van? (I’ve started looking, and it seems really expensive—August probably doesn’t help...) But it’ll still be cheaper and more nature-focused than motels...
We’re considering this route: Salt Lake City - Great Salt Lake - Yellowstone - Grand Teton, then heading back down toward Lake Tahoe, Yosemite (Sequoia Park if we have time), and San Francisco.
Do you think this is doable? Any suggestions for other sites to visit?
Also, any recommendations for campgrounds in these areas?
Thanks in advance!
Chiang Rai to Pai road in April
Hi there,
As we’re putting the finishing touches on our travel journal, we could really use your help, please.
We’re heading to Thailand in three weeks and will be in Chiang Rai right during the burning season...
Will the stunning road between Chiang Rai and Pai still be beautiful?
Are the landscapes green like we’d expect at this time of year, or are they dry with gray and brown mountains due to the drought?
We were planning to rent a car, but that’s a lot of time we could spend elsewhere if it’s not worth it!
Thanks for your help.
Return bus to Chapelle en Valgaudemar in the Écrins Park
Hi there,
This summer, my sister and I would like to do part of the tour of old Chaillol. We’re thinking of leaving our car at Chapelle en Valgaudemar and going hiking for three days with two nights in a mountain refuge. At the end of the third day, do you know if it’s possible to take a bus or coach to get back to Chapelle en Valgaudemar? From Pont du Fossé or Chabottes. If not, would you have another more suitable route to suggest?
Thanks in advance.

Start of the maple water harvest in Quebec
Hi there,
Maybe you already use it in your recipes? Just to let you know that here in Quebec, the maple water harvest has started in several regions. The next step will be to boil this water to turn it into syrup. A sweet nectar, it works well in salad dressings, desserts, with salmon, and more. 😋
If you ever pass through here, don’t miss the chance to visit one of our wonderful sugar shacks. You can taste maple taffy on snow, among other things. 😄
Cheers! 👋

Seoul, South Korea - Feedback
Hi everyone,
I’m planning a short trip of about 7-8 days in Seoul in mid-July.
I’ll be traveling with my 15-year-old daughter, who loves Asian culture.
This will be our first trip to Asia, and I’d really love to experience the authentic side of Asia.
I’ve done some research, and I’m a bit worried that Seoul might just be a big city like ‘New York’ and that we won’t find that authentic feel.
Is it possible to mix modern and authentic without spending too much time on transportation?
I’d really love to make this trip special for my daughter, but I’m honestly worried about ending up surrounded by skyscrapers for a whole week.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Transfer between terminals at Atlanta Airport
Hi there,
Okay, I’m starting to get really nervous about this airport and the transfer... Could you please reassure me about the route I need to take?
PLEASE MESSAGE ME ON FACEBOOK AT LOUISE ANDREE DELORME—it’ll be quicker for me. Seriously, I’m even willing to give a little something financially for your help!! We’re leaving this Monday, March 3...
Flight with Delta Air Lines Flight 2625 Departure from Montreal (Quebec) at 6:00 PM Arrival at Atlanta at 9:00 PM Terminal 1 (Layover 1 hour)
Flight with Delta Air Lines Flight 1229 Departure at 10:00 PM Atlanta Terminal S Arrival at Fort Lauderdale at midnight Terminal 2
I don’t have any gate numbers yet... I guess we’ll get those when we present the e-ticket?
From what I understand, I stay in Terminal 1 and head south to find the gate—is that right? Is it walkable or do I need to take the train? Is it well signposted or is it a nightmare?
--
Return trip (this seems more complicated) Delta Air Lines Flight 1168
Departure from Fort Lauderdale at 5:00 AM Terminal 2 Arrival at Atlanta at 12:00 PM Terminal S (Layover 1 hour 15 minutes)
Delta Air Lines Flight 2597 Departure from Atlanta at 9:00 AM TERMINAL 1 Arrival at Montreal at 11:00 AM
What I understand is... Terminal 2 means international flights. So I need to head south to Terminal 1 (domestic flight?)
Is that where I take the Plane Train or a bus?
Thanks to whoever takes the time to help!
PS: We don’t have any luggage... just a bag that fits under the seat. Thank goodness! !

Climbing Haut-Folin via the southern route, in stages
Hello everyone,
I’m so happy to share my climb with you, and if it inspires you to take it on, then it’ll be a success. Sometimes I’ll use the local language because I think it’s essential to connect with the people we meet along the way.
This adventure took place last year, just before winter, right after summer, and smack in the middle of autumn. That really sets the time of year. After climbing Mont-Beuvray—a story I shared here ages ago—I decided to tackle a much more adventurous peak: the summit of Haut-Folin, which rises to 901 m, and that’s no small feat, let’s be honest. It’s located in the Bois du Roi massif. Up there, you often brush against the clouds, which seem to take a mischievous pleasure in wrapping around you.
I’m going fully self-sufficient—no porters, no guide, no cook. I’m just treating myself to a very short approach flight. The flight is early in the morning on a small plane, the *Spirit of St Bernadette*, and it’s perfect. I’ll enjoy watching it deliver mail in the mountains. The pilot will drop me off at the hamlet of *La Pierre en Eau*, near Anost, a small village at the foot of this forest-covered giant.
Physical condition I’m now really seasoned for such an expedition because I’ve trained every day by walking to the village grocery store—round trip, in all weather, that’s 2.1 km. The 451 m elevation gain won’t be a problem for me. .../...

Reliability of the bus network in La Gomera (Canary Islands)
Hello everyone,
We’re planning to spend 15 days in early May in La Gomera, solely for hiking and exploring the island. We like to take our time and not rush to see everything. We’ve booked small hostels or hotels, and our itinerary will be: San Sebastian -> Playa Santiago -> Valle Gran Rey -> Vallehermoso -> back to San Sebastian
We’re hesitating about renting a car—it would certainly give us more flexibility compared to buses, but it also comes with a budget and responsibilities (parking, getting back to the car after a hike, driving fatigue, distances, etc.). Since hiking is our main focus, the ROTHER guidebook shows mostly hikes that are accessible by bus. Is the bus network reliable? Is it restrictive to go without a car, with 2 or 3 nights in each location?
Thanks for your feedback—we can’t decide!
Best, Thomas

Connecting in Santiago: how much transit time?
Hi there,
We’re heading to Chile in September 2025, and we booked a Paris–Santiago flight (AF) that was supposed to arrive in Santiago at 7:45 AM, with a same-day connection to Calama on LATAM at 2 PM. Air France just changed the arrival time to 8:45 AM in Santiago. Do you think we’ll still have enough time for the connection to Calama, or should we change our 2 PM flight to one the next morning? The other same-day options are too late. How long should we budget for customs, health checks, and baggage claim—since we’ll need to recheck our bags for Calama?
Is moving between the international terminal and the domestic terminal time-consuming?
Thanks so much for your help! :)

RV trip across Alaska
Hi everyone,
My husband and I are planning an RV trip to Alaska. If any of you have already done a road trip in that part of the world, could you share your experience with us? We’re planning to leave in mid-June (departing from Halifax).
Any tips or info would be greatly appreciated.

French Polynesia Itinerary
Hello!
I’m planning a solo trip from April 16th to June 2nd!
I have to work for 3 weeks in Papeete when I arrive in French Polynesia, so I can only explore on the weekends (3-day weekends). For my first weekend, I’ll visit Tahiti; my second weekend will be dedicated to Moorea, and the last weekend to Huahine.
After my work period, I’ll continue with my vacation and keep exploring:
Maupiti - 4 nights
Raiatea - 3 nights (including a day trip to Tahaa)
Bora Bora - 3 nights
Rangiroa - 4 nights (could do 3)
Tikehau - 2 nights (could do 3)
Fakarava - 3 nights
For activities, I’m mostly interested in discovering the islands, hiking, and observing wildlife.
I’m not a diver, but I plan to do a beginner’s dive once I’m there. I love snorkeling, though, and I’m wondering if I’m spending too much time in the Tuamotus, which are famous for diving from what I’ve seen.
For travel between the islands, I’ve already looked into the Bora Tuamotu Max pass, which seems like the best option, but I’d love advice on replacing it with one or more ferries.
What do you think? I’m struggling to finalize my itinerary.
Can’t wait to read your replies!
Thanks!!
Celia

White as snow: February 2025 friendly photo contest
I could just as easily have written white as marble, white as salt, white as coconut milk...
This month’s theme is white in every way imaginable.
Not just a little touch in the top right corner of the photo!
Nor a white square on a white background...
Also, black and white won’t be allowed.
For the rest, I’ll let the voters be the sole judges of whether the theme is respected!
I’m now borrowing Ragamuffin’s wording for the rules:
Every VF member can submit up to 3 photos, until Sunday, February 23 at 11:59 PM, Clermont-Ferrand time.
Each photo must be posted in a separate message, with its number (1, 2, or 3).
Don’t forget to add a little explanation (comment, location, etc.).
Voting:
Every VF member can vote for the 3 photos they think are the best, based on their own criteria and the theme.
Voting will take place from Monday, February 24 to Friday, February 28 at 2:00 PM, Clermont-Ferrand time.
The chosen photos should be listed in order of preference: - 1st photo: 3 points - 2nd: 2 points - 3rd: 1 point
The winner is the author of the photo with the most points.
Results will be published on February 28 in the late afternoon. In case of a tie, the number of first-place votes will decide. The winner will have the honor of organizing March’s contest.
Photos that have already been nominated (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) in another contest are not eligible to participate in this one.

What to do around Bangkok for 2 days?
Hi there, what’s good to do around BKK for 2 days outside of Bangkok? We’re wrapping up our Laos-Cambodia-Thailand trip. We don’t want to stay in BKK anymore (we’ve been there many times over the past 35 years), and someone mentioned Kanchanaburi. Is it worth it? Any other suggestions, keeping in mind we’re not looking for beaches (we already know Thailand’s beaches well). All recommendations are welcome—we’re on a tight schedule as we head back to Thailand on February 3rd and have 2 days to spend outside Bangkok from the 7th to the 9th of February. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help! Tialou
What destination near Singapore during monsoon season?
Hi there,
We’re visiting our daughter in Singapore during All Saints' Day. The plan is to spend 3-4 days there to enjoy time with her and explore Singapore, which we’ve never seen before.
After that, we’d like to spend 8 days somewhere not too far away—mixing sightseeing and maybe some beach time.
We’ve already been to Bali, Thailand, and northern Vietnam.
This’ll be starting October 20th, so, let’s just say it’s not the best season for Southeast Asia—I know, with the monsoon, we’re fully aware.
Any destination ideas for this time of year? I was thinking Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi?), Borneo (8 days?), or the Philippines, but I think that might be a bit too far for just 8 days.
Thanks for your thoughts!

Spain or Albania in the sunny days of 2025
Hi there! I’d love to travel around Europe and I’ve been thinking about Spain—like Tenerife or other spots—or Albania to explore a bit of Europe. I’m a little nervous about going alone since it’ll be my first time traveling, but I’m friendly, a bit funny (or so I’ve been told), and really motivated. If any of you have specific destinations in mind and are looking for someone to join you anytime between May and August, let me know so we can chat! Looking forward to it! 🙂😇
Sea temperature in March 2025 in Dubai

What a joy to be back on this forum that I’ve browsed for so many years :-)!
I’m heading to Japan with my partner in November 2025. This will be my second trip there and his first.
I was planning to go from Tokyo to Matsumoto, which I haven’t visited before, and from there, check out Shirahone Onsen and then hike from Magome to Tsumago. However, after reading several travel journals, I’ve realized that the village of Shirakawa-go and its surroundings look amazing. Back in 2006, I visited Takayama, which I loved, but I don’t want to stay there again.
To visit the places mentioned above (Shirahone Onsen, Shirakawa-go, Magome, and Tsumago), I’m thinking that a car might be more convenient than public transport, especially for getting from Shirakawa-go to Magome. Could you confirm if that’s the case? If so, is it easy to rent a car for a few days to do a loop starting from Matsumoto?
Thanks in advance for your valuable tips.
Have a great evening
