Road conditions in Angola
by Jpb74 · 2026-02-01 · 1 reply
Hi, I’m heading to Angola for two weeks starting mid-April and I’d like to rent a car to explore the country, but not a 4x4 to keep my budget in check. I plan to mostly stay in the western part and go as far as the Namibian border. Is it possible to drive in Iona Park without a 4x4, or to get to Kalendula or Piedra Negras? Also, is the Lubango–Huambo–Kuito–Malanje route doable in a city car? Lastly, do gas stations accept Visa? Thanks for your feedback and tips!
Quebec Itinerary for Indian Summer
by Join2culasse · 2025-11-02 · 12 replies
Hi everyone! 🙂 My partner would love to discover Quebec, while I’ve already been there over 15 years ago (Quebec City, Tadoussac, the Fjords, Lac Saint-Jean). This time, of course, we’d want to do something different. Quebec City would still be a must for my partner in this plan. With the tight budget we have right now🤪, we’re thinking of spending several days in Quebec City, then maybe renting bikes to explore the surrounding areas—aside from Montmorency Falls, what other nice spots are worth visiting? I remember there being tons of bike paths. After that, we’d rent a car (for a few days to visit the parks) and use trains or buses for the rest of the trip. From what I recall, cars aren’t super fuel-efficient there. Since we’ve never seen Niagara Falls, I’d like to include it in this itinerary. For a roughly 15-day trip in September, I was thinking of a multi-destination flight: France-Quebec / Toronto-France, so it’d look something like this: Quebec City: 5 days (including arrival day) Pick up the car La Mauricie National Park (or others?) 1 day Mont-Tremblant 1 day Montreal 4 days Drop off the car in Montreal By train/bus Toronto 2 days By train/bus Buffalo-Niagara Falls 1 day Toronto 1 day (return to France) I was planning one night at Niagara Falls—is that enough, or is a single day sufficient? If our finances don’t stretch that far, we’d shorten the trip from Montreal (so long, Niagara🙁), adding extra nights between Quebec City and Montreal. Anyway, thanks in advance for all your great tips!
Motel or RV in the American West?
by Thierry1961 · 2025-10-17 · 20 replies
Hey everyone, we’re heading to the American West for 21 days in August. Two options for us: renting a regular car and staying in motels, or going with an RV. We’ve traveled a lot in Southern Africa on our own with a 4x4 roof-top tent, but the US is a whole different story. I’d love to hear your thoughts—budget-wise, we’re probably looking at similar costs. Thanks for your input! Thierry
My Cuba trip experience
by Mondusthan · 2025-10-16 · 12 replies
Hi everyone.

Here’s my personal account (just my own opinion, of course):

My trip lasted 2 months (January to March 2025). Backpacking, solo, and on a very tight budget (15 € per day on average). I traveled from Havana to: Viñales, Santa Marta/Varadero, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Sancti Spíritus, Camagüey, Bayamo, Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Baracoa, Moa, Holguín, Santa Clara, Cienfuegos, and back to Havana.

In Cuba, if you stay in *casas particulares*, you’ll have plenty of options. They’re everywhere. When I did door-to-door, I negotiated prices based on my small budget. Not always accepted, but I still managed to find families willing to host me. The island has fewer and fewer tourists each year, so many now prefer to rent a room at a low price rather than leave it empty. Inflation is insane, and Cubans struggle to get by day to day.

Door-to-door works really well (look for the blue logo of a roof on the house, which means it’s licensed to rent to foreigners)—you’ll see them everywhere. If it makes you feel more secure, you can also book through Airb’n’b, but you won’t be able to negotiate there. Important: make sure to get a VPN subscription on your phone, otherwise you won’t be able to book anything (since Airbnb is a U.S. site).

Now, for the West:

- Viñales: very pretty but *super* touristy! So, food prices are a bit high… but it’s the cheapest place to stay I found in the whole country (3 €-4 per night!!!), because there’s so much competition with *casas* (you’ll find them on every street!).

- Cienfuegos: a human-scale city, I really liked it because it’s so peaceful. Waterfront, pretty square, good prices, wide and well-lit streets—very pleasant…

- Trinidad: very expensive and very touristy. Pretty (cobblestone streets, historic center, natural surroundings), but packed with people…

- Havana: easy to find cheap accommodation if you look in Chinatown. However, you shouldn’t mind the noise and street prostitution (getting approached every 10 meters)… Central Havana is the only well-maintained and upscale part of the city (so very expensive, for tourists with money). Outside of that, everything is run-down, in ruins, or very poor (and cheap as a result).

- Varadero: no interest at all. Very expensive, superficial, and ultra-touristy. Absolutely nothing Cuban about the place. If you still want to go, stay 3 km before in Santa Marta—it’s cheaper, and you can easily walk there.

- Santa Clara: a very pretty small city with its central square. Hard to find a good place to eat with electricity—if you can afford it, go to *El Sol* restaurant, no hesitation! Great welcome and a charming spot to enjoy a meal. For accommodation, I recommend a wonderful person, Juan Carlos. *Casa San Lorenzo* on Calle Martí! Always attentive, a great spirit, and good advice…

For the Center:

- Sancti Spíritus: nothing special… just a stopover city.

- Camagüey: a nice city with welcoming people (like everywhere else), but nothing particularly noteworthy.

For the Southeast:

- Bayamo: very small, nothing special.

- Santiago de Cuba: I loved it! It felt like San Francisco with its hilly layout! Lots of street life, musicians, affordable *casas*, easy to make friendly connections, quiet spots by the water, and lively areas downtown (despite the downside of being approached every 2 minutes). And always, a warm welcome from locals (shoutout to the adorable Erika, Souleydis, and her partner—I’m giving a shoutout to *Casa San Pedro* on Calle Princesa!).

- Guantánamo: no interest. Hard to find accommodation or even food. Nothing special and not very pretty either…

- Baracoa: very pretty, though! Kept in its own juice, very typical, authentic, a peaceful waterfront, and stunning natural surroundings… Easy to find cheap accommodation.

- Moa: the only small town where I stayed 3 days and couldn’t find bottled water… Not much interest, except to rest before hitting the road again.

- Holguín: one of the cities I loved! I stayed over 10 days. Human-scale, lots of places to stay and sleep. No one bothers you in the street (except money changers). It’s a great place to live, and the people are very friendly.

Overall positives: no need to worry—Cuba is ultra-safe, no aggression, no risks. Cubans are very welcoming, smiling, and always ready to help. Public transport everywhere—buses, trucks, *collectivos*, *taxi wha-wha*… The ice cream is to die for (just watch out for power outages and freezers). Great breakfasts in *casas*—hearty and delicious… Movie theaters are practically free (in Cuban pesos), so cheap it’d be a shame to skip them (they’re often empty, by the way). Chess clubs in every city, open to everyone and free (they’re really good!). The general vibe is warm and joyful despite the hardships…

Overall negatives: lots of scams, theft, and prostitution. Except in Havana, the rest of the island has no electricity for most of the day. Hard to find good cheap food (without going to big restaurants or hotels). Often mediocre: pasta or pizza usually have no taste. Paranoia among many people who fear crime, even though the country is very safe… Inflation is so bad that many Cubans struggle to eat or get healthcare (medicine is rare and expensive).

That’s a lot to say, but that’s the gist of it… 😊
Visiting Fam and Rufas Islands from Gam and Mansuar

hi there I’m planning a trip focused mainly on snorkeling and diving in Raja Ampat, covering two islands: Gam and Mansuar. I’d also like to spend a few days on Fam and Rufas Islands. Is it cheaper to depart from Gam or Mansuar? Do you have any info on the budget I should expect? If you’ve got any great tips, I’d love to hear them! Thanks in advance
Average drink prices in restaurants and hotels in Brazil

Traveling to Japan for 2 to 3 months – what are your tips?
by Eneapgn · 2025-08-21 · 8 replies
Hi there,

A few friends and I are planning our trip to Japan for next autumn. This will be my first time traveling, which is why we’ve decided to go for a big trip of at least 2 months, maybe even 3.

So far, we’ve estimated the budget to be between 7,000 and 10,000 € per person for the stay. I’m not sure if that’s too high or too low, considering we’ll be moving around a lot.

Here’s a summary of the route we’d like to take:

First, we definitely want to visit the classics like Tokyo, Kyoto, etc. Then head toward Mount Fuji with Fujiyoshida and the surrounding area. We’d also like to visit some less touristy, more authentic spots like the Wakayama region. We’d like to check out some mountain or countryside villages like Shirakawa-go for a few hikes. We’re still debating whether to visit Miyajima and Hiroshima since we’re not sure we’ll have enough time. And we sadly had to cut Hokkaido from our list for the same reason.

I won’t go into every detail since we’ve mapped out over twenty places, but those are the main highlights.

As for our travel style:

We want to take our time. Not try to cram in as much as possible without any breaks or enjoyment. Most of the time, we’ll be staying in Airbnbs and youth hostels. For food, we’ll mix it up between restaurants, pre-made meals, and cooking our own. For transportation, we’re considering renting a car to reach villages in the countryside. (I’m a bit nervous about the road rules over there.) For activities, one or two a day seems reasonable. (Both free and paid ones.) But I have no idea how much souvenirs might cost. I’ve often read on forums that it’s between 200 and 600 €?

My questions:

So, that’s the plan. We’re not sure yet if we’ll go for two or three months. It’ll mostly come down to money. We want to be mindful of our budget but still treat ourselves—no regrets about missing out on an activity or restaurant we really wanted to try.

Do you have any advice or suggestions for us? What do you think of our itinerary? For flight tickets, I’m estimating between 650 and 900 € for a round trip. Does that sound about right? But I have no idea which airline to choose?

Thanks so much to anyone who replies—I’d really appreciate it!

Looking for female travel companion (58/67 years old, cycle tourist) for Constance to Vienna (departure 15-20 September 2026)
by Européen25 · 2025-08-05 · 0 replies
Hello or Guten Tag, Departure planned between 15 and 20/09. Why Austria? For me, it’s a way to escape the 30°C that might still be lingering in southern France—but that’s not the only reason... For budget info, on average, the cost of living in Austria in 2024 is 3% lower than in France. Looking for a female companion living in the Castres/81 area or in 85/Vendée, where I actually plan to move. Her personality? I’d prefer to discuss that in private messages. If she doesn’t have an e-bike (I have an excellent one), we can swap our “rides” from time to time. Oh... She should be around 1.70 m tall (that’s my height), and there’s no adjustment needed (saddle height + handlebars). Don’t take it to mean that anyone under 1.70 m is automatically out—I can fix a flat tire, I’m resourceful, and I’ve got a good sense of initiative. I should mention that we’ll be riding in temperatures between 18 and 21°C. So, if you’re a travel lover who doesn’t mind slightly cooler weather, you’re welcome! I have a “good level of English language pass,” which is essential for communicating with locals, though some will understand French. Personally, I understand about twenty words of German. Some stretches without much interest can be covered by train. I’m thinking Salzburg–Passau. To be discussed... No need to panic, Monique! The elevation gain might seem intimidating, but spread over 802 km, it’s not too bad. Outbound trip: by car, left in a safe place in Constance or at the hotel where we’d have spent 3 nights. To negotiate with the manager... Return by train from Wien (that’s Vienna in German, please!) for between 38 € and 80 €. We’ll see when we’re there... I’m planning 2 to 3 nights in Constance, given the beauty of the lake (water between 22 and 24°C—maybe a swim?) and the interest this city holds. Fancy getting close to Austria’s highest peak (3800 m) after climbing a pass (a pass with a unique feature in Europe) at 2504 m? Want to have fun like a teenager on Europe’s longest summer toboggan run (on rails) for 3535 m? Want to follow the Danube River for about 317 km on the EuroVelo route 6, a path dedicated just to cyclists? Want to explore Tyrol for 3 or 4 days? Want to discover Vienna and its surroundings? FYI: late September, around 20°C. I’ll be equipped with an excellent vocal GPS. So no fumbling to find an address. Why this country? We’re in the Eurozone. Budget? Hard to pin down. It’ll depend on the accommodations we choose. I’m estimating around 60 to 70 € per day per person while there. Lunch as a picnic. In such a setting, it’s a must! Dinner at a restaurant-inn. Oh... One important point. I’m a heavy sleeper. Nearly 10 hours of rest. After that, I’m in a great mood. I also enjoy a nap of at least an hour after lunch if the spot allows (shady and quiet).

Trip ideas for 1 week in the United States

Hi there! I’d like to spend a week in the United States with my 19-year-old daughter. It’s her dream to go there, and we’re planning to visit New York in 18 months. For July, we’re looking for a fun week with cultural visits and some shopping, with a budget of 4000 € for two people, including travel. Just a little heads-up—I’m not a big fan of extreme heat! If you have any cool destination ideas or great tips, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks in advance 😊

Summer 2025: Trends and habits of French vacationers
by VoyageForum · 2025-05-13 · 0 replies
As summer 2025 approaches, a survey reveals that 50% of French people plan to go on vacation for at least a week, while 27% are still undecided and 23% don’t plan to go away at all.

The average budget for these vacations is 1 820 €, but 39% of vacationers are considering cutting back, mainly by limiting non-essential expenses like restaurants, shopping, or certain activities.

France remains the top destination for 68% of vacationers, followed by Europe (26%), especially among 18-34-year-olds, and non-European destinations (13%).

Among the new trends, "workation" (working from a vacation spot) appeals to 24% of vacationers, a figure that rises to 45% among 18-34-year-olds.

Alternative options like Wwoofing (working on farms in exchange for accommodation) interest 26% of young people aged 18-34.

Practices like Couchsurfing attract 13% of young travelers.

Finally, 19% of respondents see home exchanges as an interesting option, though few have tried it yet.

Isan Weather in September
by Sigalice · 2025-04-19 · 8 replies
Hi there, I’m looking to travel outside Europe in September, and my first thought was to return to Thailand. Unfortunately, what I’m reading about the weather isn’t encouraging—Indonesia seems like the better option this season. Sulawesi is really tempting, but the budget is higher. Since I’ve already been to Thailand in July a few years ago (it was overcast but with little rain), this time I’d love to explore Isan and then do some volunteering at Elephant Nature Park before ending with a few days by the sea. Do you think this is a good idea, or should I postpone it? I love sunshine, even if it’s not constant, and I’ve had enough of rain and gray skies back in Belgium 😅 Thanks so much! 🙏
Khao Sok - Hiking guide and lake tour
by Marmite · 2025-04-18 · 7 replies
Hi everyone,

So happy to discover by chance that VoyageForum is back! We’re leaving in a few days for Thailand with our two kids, aged 12 and 15. We’re considering stopping by Khao Sok but don’t want to do a typical 2D/1N or 3D/2N excursion with an overnight stay on the lake—it’s way out of our budget 🤪. Still, the place seems worth the detour. We’ve planned to spend 2 nights there (arriving in the late afternoon on the first day) and I’d love to do a full-day private boat tour on the lake and a hike (half-day or full-day). Do you think it’s doable to book on the spot if we arrive a bit late on the first day? Or is it better to book in advance? None of the websites for booking these services inspire confidence—I get the feeling it’s a real lottery afterward for getting an interesting and friendly guide. But I’m worried it’ll be the same on-site since everything seems so standardized. Do you have any firsthand experience? Maybe even a Facebook contact or something for a guide? Are the prices still really that expensive if we don’t stay overnight on the lake? I’ll admit I’m not sure if we should even stop there anymore...

Thanks in advance!

Accommodation for 4 days in Santiago (Chile)

Hello, On our way back from Punta Arenas, we’ll be staying in Santiago for 4 days before heading home. Could you recommend any places to stay and neighborhoods in Santiago that are budget-friendly, please? We’d also like to visit Valparaíso despite some safety concerns. Is it better to hire a guide or book a organized tour from Santiago? Or can we plan it independently? Can this be done in a day? Thanks, Odile
Choosing a hotel in Las Vegas: need advice
by UsOfLulu · 2025-02-11 · 3 replies
Hi everyone,

I’ve been reading reviews of different hotels for 3 nights in Las Vegas, and now I’m totally lost ;) So far, within our budget, we’ve shortlisted: (in no particular order) - the New York New York - the Park MGM - the Planet Hollywood

We’ll be back for just one night in Las Vegas, and for that single night, we’re thinking of staying near the airport. The Luxor seems like a good option based on price—we want to splurge a bit more for the first 3 nights.

Our main priorities are cleanliness, and honestly, it feels like it’s hit-or-miss everywhere... Also, check-in seems to take forever at all these places, and since we land at 6 PM, by the time we get there... with the jet lag, the long check-in is really stressing me out... How’s the soundproofing at these hotels, by the way? We don’t need parking, and the pool isn’t a big deal for us :)

We’re open to other affordable suggestions!

Thanks in advance for all your tips, have a great week!
Lofoten or Faroe Islands in October?
by Pénéllope · 2025-01-19 · 4 replies
Hi there, I’m posting this because I can’t decide. We’d like to travel in mid-October to explore a Nordic destination. We’ll have 6 full days on-site. I’m torn between the Faroe Islands and Lofoten... What about the weather and the cost of accommodation? My budget is a maximum of 120 € per night. I don’t want to rush but take the time to explore just one part of these islands and avoid running around too much. The Faroe Islands might be pricier and less lively. Lofoten requires more flight connections... In terms of landscapes and 6-day hikes, could you share your feedback?

My request is a bit vague.

Thanks for reading!

Hotels in Venice near St. Mark’s Square
by Doliphant · 2025-01-17 · 3 replies
Hello! What a pleasure to be back on Voyage Forum! We’ll be in Venice from March 20th to 24th, and I’m looking (for two couples) for a hotel close to St. Mark’s Square—my husband can’t walk long distances. For four nights with breakfast, our budget is around 1,400 € per couple. To avoid too much walking for him, I’d also prefer a hotel where we could potentially eat dinner in the evenings. If anyone has any recommendations, thank you in advance to those who reply!

4 days in the Maldives: what to see and do easily from the airport?

Hi there, we’re heading to Sri Lanka for two weeks next February and plan to stop over in the Maldives for about 4 days. Which islands/accommodations can you recommend for a modest budget, and not too far from the airport? Some islands are reachable in a few hours by public ferry. But do they have beautiful beaches, translucent water, and nice fish and coral? I’ve seen some reasonably priced places to stay but I’m struggling to get a sense of the quality/beauty of the beaches. Thanks for your tips!

Short city trip - Stockholm February 2024
by Dexter236 · 2024-12-02 · 8 replies
Hello everyone,

I’m trying to take the time to share one or two travel journals I wrote elsewhere (the forum wasn’t accessible when I was writing them...).

My partner and I went to Stockholm from February 27th to March 1st, 2024.

It was a pretty short trip, shaped by the usual factors: time, budget, and the kids.

We live not far from Luxembourg City (about an hour away), and when we can, we fly with Luxair. It’s a quality airline, but it’s a bit pricey.

This trip was originally planned for 2022, but it was canceled by the airline a few weeks before departure. Since the flight was on a De Havilland Q-400 with a max of 76 passengers, I think there just weren’t enough people booked.

So, we booked a flight with checked baggage and seat selection (2 + 2 seating) for around 400 € round trip.

For the hotel, I chose the **Radisson Blu Waterfront** through Booking.com for just under 600 €, including breakfast.

PS: I had to grab photos from the web and adjust their resolution, so they’re not amazing—sorry about that!

Hi there,

I’m spending a month in northern Vietnam, and my trip starts in Lào Cai and Sapa. Could you recommend a scooter rental place? Of course, I’d like one with clean, well-maintained equipment and a trustworthy rental company.

Also, any recommendations for budget homestay hotels in Sapa—max 20 € per night?

Any ideas for scooter tour routes (blogs welcome)? I’ll be heading to Điện Biên Phủ for a trip.

Thanks!
