Need advice to finalize Malaysia itinerary
Hey everyone,
I’m over in East Borneo in mid-July.
I’m struggling to wrap up the end of my itinerary, even though it’s pretty straightforward (long but simple).
Last year, we did Malaysia (KL and the mainland + around Kuching).
Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees. Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands. Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way). Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan. Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide). Day 8 – Sepilok for the orangutans, the Sun Bear Centre, and Rainforest Discovery Centre. Day 9 – Selingan, turtle island. Day 10 – Head to Semporna. Day 11-12-13-14 – Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai. Day 15 – Bohey Dulang. Day 16 to Day 25: I’M STUCK.
I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous. I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing. I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture. But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary. If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
What do you all think? Thanks in advance!

Is two and a half days enough to visit Prague?
Hi there, I was wondering if it's possible to see the highlights of Prague in two and a half days? My flight arrives on a Sunday evening at 9 PM, so we’d have Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning to explore. Return flight is on Wednesday at 4:30 PM. Best regards, Christophe

What's the weather like in October/November in Mauritius?
Hi,
We’ve booked our flight tickets and we’re leaving from October 29th to November 13th for Mauritius.
I just reserved our accommodation in Cap Malheureux.
We’re used to hot and especially very sunny destinations like Oman, Jordan, Uzbekistan...
If you can reassure me about the period—can we expect sunny weather? I’m really dreaming of discovering Le Morne Brabant under beautiful sunshine...
Thanks
Pirate attack off the coast of Madagascar
Hello,
Be careful when sailing between Somalia and northern Madagascar. It appears to be Somali pirates who have widened their search in the Mozambique Channel, far from their usual attack zone, since, to my knowledge, there are no Malagasy pirates.

Aviophobia, how to overcome it?
Hello fellow travelers,
After an engine failure in mid-2016 on a long-haul flight from BRISBANE to LYON, I developed a persistent aviophobia that I’m struggling to shake off. It’s becoming more and more of a hindrance.
Up until now, I’ve been using an avoidance strategy (for example, avoiding destinations that would require any other mode of transport than a car or train), but lately, it’s become really limiting.
I’m looking for a therapist—either in-person or via video call—who could help me get past this hurdle.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Motel or RV in the American West?
Hey everyone,
we’re heading to the American West for 21 days in August.
Two options for us:
renting a regular car and staying in motels, or going with an RV.
We’ve traveled a lot in Southern Africa on our own with a 4x4 roof-top tent, but the US is a whole different story.
I’d love to hear your thoughts—budget-wise, we’re probably looking at similar costs.
Thanks for your input!

Trip proposal to the Red Tadrart in the Algerian desert late November/early December
Hi everyone,
I’m looking to put together a small group to explore the Red Tadrart in the Tassili n’Ajjer desert from November 28 to December 7, 2025 (dates flexible depending on participants’ availability).
The idea is to experience this adventure together and benefit from group discounts.
=> Around 1000 € per person for a group of 5
=> Less if the group is larger.
This won’t be my first trip to the area, so you can trust me when I say you’re in for an incredible experience.
Highlights: endless red dunes, natural arches, ancient rock carvings, and camping under the stars.
For flight tickets, we can coordinate to optimize schedules and costs based on where everyone’s traveling from.
If you’re keen to discover the Sahara in a different way, or if you’d like more details, feel free to reach out.

Car rental at LAX with a child
Hi there,
I’m looking to rent a car when I arrive in Los Angeles for 18 days.
1) I was planning to bring the booster seat for my 5-year-old son and not rent one on-site. Am I still complying with the law?
2) Since there are only two of us in the car, my main goal is price. Which rental agency or website have you tried and recommend?
3) Is it true that for the same rental company, it’s cheaper to pick up the car a bit farther from LAX? For example, Hertz has several locations nearby. Apparently, there’s less selection, but I don’t care about that—I just want the cheapest option.
Thanks for your tips! !

What are the best day-hike routes around Mu Cang Chai and the terraced rice fields?
Hi there,
We’re spending a month in northern Vietnam this coming November and we’d love to do some day hikes around the village of Mu Cang Chai to see the famous spiral terraced rice fields. We’ll most likely be staying in Mu Cang Chai itself and we don’t have a car.
It’s really tough to find a route online. Any tips would be great.
Thanks in advance.
Meals on the Bangkok-Chiang Mai overnight train?
Hi there,
I’d love to know if any of you have recently eaten on the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
We’ve always ordered food on the train, and it was really good (and super convenient). But in 2022, we ended up feeling like total idiots (with our 4-year-old daughter...) when we boarded the train only to find out that this service was no longer available... (It was the first time we’d traveled right after COVID.)
That’s also when we saw once again how kind Thai people are—they all offered to share their food with us, even though we were mortified. In the end, we managed to buy some instant noodles, which was better than nothing. Anyway, that’s the little story behind it.
In the following years, we’ve always brought our own meals.
I’ve read online that meal trays are back in service (could you confirm this, please?), but that the quality is really poor. I’ve also seen multiple reports that, even though you can eat well everywhere in Thailand, the train meal was the worst food travelers had during their trip...
Could you give me a recent opinion on this? We’ll be departing from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station—do you know if there’s anywhere to buy a meal there before boarding the train?
Thanks so much for your help, and have a great Sunday!

My life in Camargue, my homeland, and in Colombia, my heart's country
My two bullfighting traditions when I'm back home in Camargue (France) and in Colombia (Caribbean) every time I return. 🤠
Details:
Bullfights (corridas) aren’t part of my two bullfighting traditions, but I respect those who attend them!!!
In these two ancestral bullfighting traditions—which aren’t bullfights—the Bulls and Toros aren’t killed or tortured, as some might think.
These are bull games where the animals return to their pastures afterward and only come back to the Arenas 2–3 times a year at most.
They spend 15 minutes in the ring for the Camarguais and 5 minutes for the Toros in the Colombian Corralejas.
They’re cared for and pampered. They’ll die of old age in miles of open fields.
The young people who face them are professionals, risking their lives to support their families and live their Passion for the Toro!!! 😄

Question about safety of Gili Gede-Bali crossing
Hi everyone.
I’ve been wondering about the safety of the crossing between Gili Gede in Lombok and Bali via Gili Gateway. I need to get to Bali in early September, and the 2-hour crossing is appealing, but given recent boat incidents, I’m questioning the safety and navigation conditions.
If anyone has any info, I’d love to hear it! Flying is still an option...

Advice for trip to Piraeus - ferry at 7:15 AM
Hi,
I need to take a ferry to Sifnos on 17/07 at 7:15 AM, departing from Piraeus.
I’ll be staying in Athens near Omonia station, and the metro goes directly to Piraeus.
How early should I arrive at the port to make sure I don’t miss the ferry?
Is the metro station far from the port?
Are the signs to find the right ferry clear?
I can’t figure out if the first metro is at 5:30 or 6:30 AM?
Because if it’s 6:30, it’s a no-go—I’ll have to arrange a taxi or shuttle... I’m not sure how to handle this early ferry. Any advice would be super helpful!
Thanks
Violent anti-government protests and repression in Kenya
Hi everyone planning to travel to Kenya with (or without) kids,
Just so you know:
This week, extremely violent protests, met with live ammunition repression, have resulted in many casualties and hundreds of injuries across several Kenyan cities. There’s also been widespread destruction, fires, and looting accompanying these violent scenes...

Poipet border crossing closed: what's the alternative? (Cambodia to Thailand)
Hi,
We’re supposed to cross this border at the end of July on our way from Siem Reap, and we just found out it’s closed. Is it easy to find a flight ticket from Siem Reap to Bangkok? Aren’t there really any other options?
Thanks
Mauritius: Looking for snorkeling beaches and hiking ideas
Hi there,
My flight ticket to Mauritius is booked, and my accommodations are all set.
The plan: relaxation, hiking, and swimming...😛
I’m looking for hiking ideas anywhere on the island (I’ll have a car). Nothing over 15 km round trip and a maximum of 500 m elevation gain. (A little more if it’s an exceptional hike.)
I’m also searching for beaches where I can do some snorkeling without needing to take a boat or join an excursion.
I’ve seen that sea kayaking tours are available. Is it possible to just rent a kayak, and which spots on the island are best for easy kayaking?
If you have other suggestions (villages, viewpoints, etc.) for independent excursions, I’m all ears!😉
Thanks🙂

Best time at the end of the year to visit Mexico?
Hello,
When’s the best week at the end of the year to go back to Mexico?
Cheers,

3 weeks in Colombia (August 2023)
Why Colombia?
It's quite simple. For the past few years, my daughter has been living with a Colombian from Bogotá. The idea was to discover his country, meet his family, and do part of the trip all four of us together.
We’re heading out first as scouts, then they’ll join us to continue the journey.
The itinerary was shared in another post—now it’s time for the impressions.
No photos, as for me, it’s video and nothing more!
Day 1: The big departure What was planned: A flight from Lyon Saint-Exupéry late morning heading to Frankfurt. Two hours of waiting in Frankfurt (just enough time to eat a pretzel!!) and then off to Bogotá for an arrival around 7 PM local time. I hadn’t done the Check-Mig (to be done 72 hours before the flight). I did it on my phone, giving a fake arrival date in Colombia, and the attendant told me there wouldn’t be any issues in Bogotá. Actually, two hours of delay at departure in Lyon because a sick passenger was on the plane—they had to evacuate him, and the ambulance that was supposed to be there didn’t have permission to come near the plane. Ah, French administrative formalities!!!!! Flight to Frankfurt with Lufthansa went smoothly. A sprint through the airport—very well organized. Connection secured, so we boarded the plane, and two hours later than scheduled, we took off for an 11-hour flight! Arrival in Bogotá, and the immigration process took over an hour and a half because of the crowds. However, no issues with the Check-Mig—they barely glanced at it. Our daughter’s father-in-law ended up waiting over 3 hours at the airport because of this!!! Surprise: No luggage. Luckily, we had packed essentials in our carry-ons! Quick administrative paperwork, and Lufthansa informed me our bags would be on the next flight, so no big deal. Off to our hotel in La Candelaria and a good night’s rest.
The plus: We’re in Bogotá! The minus: Flight delays are becoming more and more common.

Thailand with family: a few practical questions
Hi there,
As mentioned earlier, we're heading off for a month to explore some parts of Thailand in July/August, and I’ve got a few practical questions I’m hoping you can help with based on your experiences. Thanks in advance!
- Can you choose the denominations at exchange bureaus/ATMs? How do you avoid ending up with only 1000-baht notes when exchanging large sums? - If not, is there an easy way to get change? Any alternatives to buying stuff at 7-Eleven? - Can you buy train tickets from Thonburi to Kanchanaburi in advance? Is there usually space available, considering some people do the Death Railway day trip from Bangkok to Sai Yok Noi? - Is there room for luggage on the trains to Kanchanaburi? We’ll be traveling as a group of four with two large checked-baggage-sized suitcases (25 kg each). - Kanchanaburi: Most day tours allow around 3 hours at Erawan Falls. Is that enough, or is it worth spending the whole day there, especially at the start of the rainy season when it’s a bit greener? - In Sam Roi Yot, are there taxis/Grab/Bolt available for exploring the surrounding areas? I’d appreciate any numbers or addresses. - Does True (7-Eleven) have good coverage across Thailand, from Sam Roi Yot to Chiang Rai, or should we go with AIS? - In Bangkok, if you need to switch BTS lines, do you need a new ticket, or can you change lines as long as you don’t exit the station?
Happy to provide any additional details if needed.

Helicopter crash in New York
For those who want to take a helicopter flight in New York:
In mid-April, a sightseeing helicopter flight in NYC turned tragic. A helicopter carrying a Spanish family of five and a pilot crashed into the Hudson River shortly after taking off from Manhattan.
Apparently, the loss of the rotor caused the sudden fall near the West Side Highway.
Despite rescue efforts, all six occupants died.
This has reignited the debate over whether helicopters should be banned for sightseeing flights in NYC or elsewhere.

Fish. April 2025 Photo Contest Theme
Hi everyone,
Starting tomorrow (the first day of the month), the April contest kicks off with the theme "Fish."
Important note: There was a contest in January 2020 on the theme "Fishing," where we hardly saw any fish. So this time, it should not be about fishing but mainly about fish. Live fish (1), dead fish (2), fish used in various artistic (3), commercial (4), or other illustrations (5).
Practical details:
Participation: Each VF member can submit up to 3 photos, until Saturday, April 26 at 11:59 PM Brussels time. Each photo should be posted in a separate message, with its number (1, 2, or 3). Don’t forget to add a little explanation (comment, location, etc.).
Voting: Each VF member can vote for the 3 photos they think are the best, based on their own criteria and the theme.
Voting will take place from Sunday, April 27 to Wednesday, April 30 at 11:59 PM Brussels time.
The selected photos will be ranked in order of preference: - 1st photo: 3 points - 2nd: 2 points - 3rd: 1 point
The winner is the photographer whose photo receives the most points.
Results will be published on May 1. In case of a tie, the number of first-place votes will decide. The winner will have the honor of organizing the May 2025 contest.
Photos that have already been nominated (1st, 2nd, or 3rd place) in another contest are not eligible for this one.
This thread is exclusively for photos submitted to the contest. All discussions, comments, and chit-chat should be posted in the thread: Discussion on the April 2025 contest theme "Fish"
(1) Japanese fish (not yet turned into sushi 😛)

(2) Fish considered small fry and left on an Indonesian beach

(3) Street art in Bristol (England)

(4) Sign in Bristol (England)

(5) Hikiyama Exhibition Hall in Karatsu (Kyushu, Japan)

Good luck! 😛
PS: Whales, sperm whales, porpoises, and dolphins are welcome—let’s be inclusive! 😎

Good luck! 😛

Experience with e-assist on recumbent bikes
hi,
so glad the site’s open for discussion again...
I’m planning a trip on a recumbent bike. Has anyone here tried recumbents with e-assist? I went for this option because climbing mountains is tough without a boost—probably going with a mid-drive motor.
Also, anyone up for joining a stretch of the route heading toward Greece at the end of 2025?
welcome

Finalizing our Panama itinerary
Hi there,
After a lot of hesitation about our Central America destination (trip in July), we finally decided on Panama.
For this country, we're looking for info to fine-tune our itinerary.
To avoid spending entire days in the car, does anyone have any firsthand experiences or suggestions for towns or villages to stop at: Between Panama City and Valle de Anton? Between Valle de Anton and Pedasí (Santiago, Parita, Chitré)? Between Pedasí (or another nearby village) and Santa Catalina? Is Isla Cébaco worth the detour? (How do you get there?) Is there another departure point for Coiba (other than Santa Catalina)? Between Santa Catalina and David (is Boca Chica worth the detour?) Between David and Boquete? Between Boquete and Bocas del Toro?
Also, we’ve seen that Panama is known for its waterfalls, some of which look stunning—like Cascada Macho de Monte and La Silampa.
Do you know of any waterfalls that are easy to access (we’re traveling with a child) and don’t require hours of hiking?
Thanks in advance if you can help! (Of course, we’re researching everywhere, but nothing beats real-life experiences.) :)

Photographic Discovery of Vancouver Island
Let’s catch up with a new travel journal from July 2024—only 6 months late, no biggie!
We’ll be talking about this gorgeous island, its tail end, wildlife (old habits die hard), and the sheer joy of it all 🙂

5-Day Kayaking Trip in the Philippines
Hello,
I’d like to go on a 5-day kayaking trip with snorkeling, island visits, and village tours in the Philippines. I don’t have a specific island in mind, but I’d love something off the beaten path. I’m traveling solo but can join a small group. This would be around March 20th. Thanks so much for your suggestions!
