Reliable car rental agency in Panama?
For an upcoming trip to Panama, we contacted the Tout Panama network, which requires a (real) credit card for the rental companies it acts as an intermediary for—something that’s rare and apparently not so easy to get in France.
I’ve posted another question about where to find a credit card in France, but that’s a different topic.
Usually, we do our research directly on forums and especially Google Maps. We scan all the listed rental agencies and scrutinize the reviews. Very often, we come across local agencies with excellent ratings. So we avoid the big brands, which always find a way to scam you.
But for the first time, I can’t find anything that inspires confidence. On the contrary, in Panama City, all of them have terrible ratings (scams, delayed charges, etc.).
My question: are there any travelers who can recommend reliable agencies (possibly with contact details if they’re companies) that might accept debit cards?
Thanks so much in advance,

Car rental in the Cyclades
Hi everyone on the travel forum.
We’re heading to the Cyclades on May 15th for about a month and we’re debating whether to rent a car on each of the islands we’re visiting. Naxos, Andros, Tinos, Paros, and Santorini—we’ll be staying around 5 days on each. Everything’s booked except for the potential car rental. In your opinion, is it essential, or are public transport options good enough for all or some of these islands? Which companies are the most reliable, and which ones should we avoid (we’ve already had bad experiences with companies that weren’t always very professional). Thanks for your advice!

Returning a rental car at the port of Tanger Med
Hi there, we’re traveling to Tangier this summer—flying in (and renting a car) then leaving by ferry from TANGER MED, but without the car. Does anyone know if it’s possible to return the rental car at the TANGER MED port when we picked it up at TANGIER airport? I can’t find the info anywhere. Thanks so much!
Price difference for car rental in Washington
Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out for your help because I’m a bit lost trying to rent a car in Washington, DC. I’ve already rented twice out West with ALAMO—no issues, brand-new SUVs… This time, I need to rent an SUV for 12 days in Washington and return it at Newark Airport in NYC. I never would’ve thought there’d be such a price difference between the East and West Coasts!!! 12 days out East costs almost the same as 26 days out West! With Alamo out West, full insurance where you return the vehicle no matter its condition is called CDW. Here, it’s not clear at all. I’ve never rented from another company. If I stick with the two "big rental companies," here are my options:
ALAMO DULLES AIRPORT: 1,250 € with additional protection included (96 €) AVIS AIRPORT: 831 € with additional protection included (96 €) Or AVIS downtown WASHINGTON, 700m from my hotel, where I’d save on the taxi to the airport! Same price: 831 €. Has anyone ever picked up a vehicle downtown? Given the small indoor parking lot, I’m guessing the selection is limited. Is there a difference between AVIS and ALAMO? Because between 830 € and 1,250 €??????????? I’m not too familiar with other rental companies. I’ve rented brand-new cars in Europe from BUDGET for 70 € a week with no issues, but this is on the other side of the world!!!! Thanks so much for your feedback! Have a great day

Peer-to-peer car rental in Italy
Hi, I found an Italian peer-to-peer car rental site that seems much cheaper than traditional car rentals in Italy. I just need to know before booking—has anyone had any direct experience with it?

What type of car for a trip to South Africa with 5 people?
Hi everyone, we're planning a trip for August (Drakensberg, St Lucia, Blyde, Kruger, Marakele). There will be 4 adults and an 11-year-old child. That’s the intro!
Our issue is choosing the right vehicle. With luggage plus food for picnics and breakfasts, we need space. And since we’ll be driving for several hours, I’d prefer not to be squished with 3 in the back.
So, what would you recommend? An SUV? A van? And where should we rent from if you have any great tips—I’m all ears.
Thanks everyone

Car rental in Yogyakarta
Hi everyone,
This summer, I’m spending 5 days in Yogyakarta, and I’d like to rent a car on my own, but I can’t find anything... (just to clarify, I’ve already driven on every continent, including Bali, so that’s not an issue for me).
Do you have any reliable contacts? I don’t want a taxi or driver—I want the freedom to explore on my own...

Aswan to Luxor private car trip: constraints, rates, and guide-free alternatives
Hi,
We’d like to travel from Aswan to Luxor by private car, with stops at Kom Ombo and Edfu—but without a guide. I contacted an agency that’s offering the trip for 140 € for 3 people. I don’t really have a sense of pricing yet, but it seems a bit steep since the two cities aren’t *that* far apart. I get that the driver might have to return empty. Also, the agency wants us to leave early due to checkpoints where drivers have to report by a certain time. They’re also asking for copies of our passports in advance (government rules?).
Is this always the case, or is it possible to travel without these constraints? Thanks, Aquab10

Driving across Thailand off the beaten path

Could anyone give us some tips on this kind of trip?
Thanks so much, Laurent and Marie
Driving to Senegal with 2 dogs
Hi everyone, I’d like to travel to Senegal with my two dogs—an Amstaff and a French Bulldog (who can’t fly). I’m wondering if you think it’ll be complicated or if the formalities are easy to sort out.
I’m giving myself a year to prepare for this trip.

Car rental in Mahé and Praslin
Hi,
we’re traveling as a group of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids aged 9 and 12) in April. I was thinking of renting a car in Mahé and Praslin, then renting a bike on La Digue. When I look at car rental companies, there’s a whole bunch of them! For those who’ve been there before, do you have any recommendations?
Thanks!
Sandra.

Renting a car in Krabi province
Hi!
We're spending 4 days in Krabi in April—lots of walks, hikes, and sites to explore, all about 30 km away.
I'm wondering, since I'm not a big fan of minibuses (some of us get motion sickness easily), is it feasible to rent a car to explore the Krabi area?
Or is that a bad idea?
Thanks for your feedback!!!
When should we book the rental car?
Hi there,
We’ve booked our flight and accommodations. Big question: should we reserve the rental car now? Are there any rental companies we should prioritize, or is using a comparison site okay? Thanks for your feedback!

Renting a car across multiple islands in Indonesia
Hi everyone,
When we travel abroad, we usually rent a car to be independent with our itinerary and free with our timing. But we get the feeling that it’s not so simple in Indonesia.
Is it feasible, for example, to drive from Bali to Komodo National Park by car? What are the roads like? Can you rent and return cars on these smaller islands?
Thanks for your replies.
Buying a car in Punta Arenas (Chile) and selling it in Lima (Peru)
Hi there,
Next September (2025), we’re heading to Latin America as a family for a year, and we’re thinking of buying a vehicle (car, van, or camper) in Punta Arenas, Chile, to sell it later in Lima, Peru. While I don’t think buying in Punta Arenas will be too complicated, I’m looking for info on border-crossing requirements (Chile-Argentina / Argentina-Chile / Chile-Bolivia, and Bolivia-Peru), as well as the steps and conditions for selling the vehicle in Peru.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Car rental in Patras-Araxos (northern Peloponnese)
Hi, could you recommend a local and reliable car rental agency, not one of the big international chains, at Patras-Araxos Airport in northern Peloponnese
or a bit further into town?
Thanks.
Practical feedback on 2 weeks road-tripping in Taiwan
Hi there,
- Rented a Budget car online, pick-up and drop-off at the airport: 11 days for 540 €, 1,400 km driven, gas at 0.85 €/litre. Driving was very easy in the country.
- Two weeks was enough to see the highlights of Taiwan, especially with a car.
- Withdrawing cash with a Revolut or Wise card: no bank fees at Cathay Bank ATMs. They’re yellow and green, often found in Family Mart stores.
- Hikes: we did a few, the landscapes were interesting, but the trails were often too artificial for our taste (concrete, slabs, endless stairs, etc.).
- Accommodation: averaged 42 €/night, booked in the afternoon for the same evening with no issues. Often stayed in B&Bs run by locals in remote areas—sometimes hard to find and with little English spoken, but no problem with a car.
- Food: Chinese cuisine everywhere was excellent.
- Weather in December: 8 great days, 5 average, 1 bad. Temperatures were pleasant, a bit chilly at higher altitudes.
- Chungwa SIM card: 15 days for 20 €.
- Most comprehensive website: taiwanobsessed.com.
- We loved the hikes through the tea plantations in the Alishan region, Kenting Park, and the incredible Chung Tai Chan Monastery (tour with an English-speaking nun). Since Taroko was closed, the drive up the east coast from Kenting to Hualien felt long and not essential.
Here’s our practical feedback from the trip—feel free to ask if you have any questions. Safe travels!
Car rental for a Marrakech-Essaouira trip? (Morocco)
Hi fellow travelers,
We’ll be in Marrakech for 10 days in February (couple + 12-year-old child). We’d like to spend 3-4 days in Essaouira.
What’s the easiest and most budget-friendly way to make the Marrakech-Essaouira trip and then Essaouira-Marrakech (straight to the airport, I think) a few days later? Taxi? Bus? Or just rent a car? But then what do we do with the car while we’re in Essaouira? Could it be useful for exploring interesting sites outside the city while we’re there?
Thanks in advance for your great tips!

7-seater car rental (4 adults and 3 kids)
Hi there
I’m looking for advice on a road trip in the United States. I need a 7-seater vehicle with enough space for 4 checked bags (25 kg each) and a few smaller pieces of luggage. Do you have any recommendations? I’m a bit unsure about whether there’ll be enough room for the bags. Thanks so much

First time renting a car on the Panoramic Route from Hoedspruit to Nelspruit
Hi everyone,
I’m planning my trip to South Africa for February. I’m a woman traveling solo. I have a flight to Nelspruit where I plan to rent a car to visit Kruger Park, then drive the Panoramic Route (starting from Hoedspruit and returning to Nelspruit to drop off the car). The issue is, this will be my first time renting a car, and it’s stressing me out! I travel alone a lot but always manage with public transport. This time, I don’t really have a choice but to rent, but I’m uneasy about driving a car that isn’t mine—especially since it’s left-hand drive... I figure driving in Kruger Park should be manageable since speeds are limited. But I’m worried about the Panorama Road, the mountain pass, etc. Is the road very winding and dangerous? I’m afraid of ending up on narrow, rough roads with the void (Blyde Canyon) right next to me... I know I need to watch out for potholes. But do you think it’s manageable, or is it really too risky for someone who isn’t very comfortable behind the wheel?
And regarding safety (crime), do you know if there are any issues on this route? Thanks for your advice!

Car rental in El Hierro (Canary Islands)
Hi,
Does anyone know if there are several car rental agencies at the port of La Estaca when the ferries arrive? The only one I can find is CICAR, but they're relatively expensive. All the others with reasonable prices are at the airport.
Thanks,
Gilles
Inter-island car rental in the Azores
Hi,
I’m trying to plan our trip to the Azores.
I’m running into a problem: can you rent a car on one island and take it to two other islands? We’d like to pick it up on São Jorge, then go to Pico, and finally Terceira, but the only price I’m seeing is 28,000 € for a week in August! If you know any rental companies that do this, I’d love to hear about them. Thanks!

Crossing Borders by Car: Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania
Hi there,
We’re doing a staged tour of Africa in our Citroën Dyane 2CV.
We left Belgium and our car is currently in Zambia. We’ll be joining it at the start of 2025 to continue on to Malawi and Tanzania.
We’d love to chat with overlanders who’ve already crossed these borders with a vehicle—without necessarily having a carnet de passage, given the costs and guarantees required.
Thanks
8-Day Road Trip Itinerary in Morocco
Hi everyone, we’re renting a small car in Marrakech for an 8-day trip (Marrakech-Essaouira-Marrakech-Ouarzazate-Zagora-Marrakech). Is this doable?

Car rental between Montreal and Rimouski
Hi there (it feels weird coming back here after a few years... 😉),
Are there any options to rent a car at a reasonable price when arriving from France at Montreal-Trudeau Airport for a few days, with a "drop-off" in Rimouski? And vice versa a week later between Rimouski and Montreal? For a European planning to book the round-trip week-long coastal route along the North Shore between Rimouski and Blanc-Sablon, if they’d rather not pay for a full week of car rental when the vehicle would just be sitting unused, this could be the perfect solution...
Thanks for your insights! 🙂
