Health and Safety in Ethiopia
Official recommendations
In France, both for individuals and professionals, the "travel advice" from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding precautions for each country has legal value. A similar online travel advice system exists in several countries:
Health
No vaccinations are mandatory to enter the country, although it is still advisable to be up to date with your "basic vaccinations."
Diseases
Hygiene
Local healthcare facilities
Safety
Crime and delinquency
While not rampant, petty crime (sometimes violent) has been increasing in the country recently, particularly in cities and the capital. Therefore, a minimum of precautions remains necessary.
Scams and "tourist" harassment
Socio-political risks and terrorism
Beyond the long-standing low-level conflict with neighboring Eritrea (even though the situation has now somewhat normalized), Ethiopia regularly experiences ethnic tensions in various regions, along with associated violence. Additionally, there is the proximity of Somalia and its armed groups. In short, it is always best to stay well-informed about the current situation in the areas you plan to visit.
Areas to avoid
As is often the case, border areas are best avoided. In Ethiopia, all borders are off-limits except the one with Djibouti. For Somalia, the entire vast Ogaden region is advised against.
Climate, nature, and wildlife
Foreign consulates in the country
If you encounter problems while traveling abroad, your country’s consular services can assist you. It is also worth noting that if you are an EU citizen and your country is not represented, you can contact any other EU member state’s representation.
