Entry Requirements and Visa for Cape Verde
People
For French and European nationals
For a tourist trip, a passport valid for at least 6 months after the planned departure date—or simply for the duration of the stay—is required. Since 2019, European Union nationals have been exempt from a visa for any stay of less than 30 days, provided they register online on the official website (Ease.gov.cv) at least 5 days before departure. While this registration is "officially" free, the fees have been replaced by a 30 € airport security tax, payable either on the website (keep the receipt) or upon arrival.
Note that if you forget to pre-register online within 5 days, it is often possible to regularise your situation by logging onto the official site at any time or, if not, by using the dedicated kiosks and counters at the arrival airport.
Long stays
If you plan to stay between 30 and 90 days, you must apply for a tourist visa at Cape Verdean consular representations abroad or directly upon arrival. This visa can potentially be extended for the same duration later.
In case of infringement
While Cape Verdean authorities are generally accommodating, overstaying the permitted duration may result in a fine of several hundred euros or even a re-entry ban of up to 3 years.
Vehicles
Unless you plan to become a resident, bringing your vehicle to Cape Verde is rarely worthwhile. The required procedures and paperwork are usually lengthy, complex, and costly enough that buying locally is almost always the better option.
