Introduction to Southeast Asia
Location Map of Southeast Asia
Quick Overview
Countries of Southeast Asia
- Myanmar: in full "transition" for several years now, Myanmar is increasingly establishing itself as a major destination in Southeast Asia despite ongoing issues in certain regions. Less adventurous and off-the-beaten-path than before, the country now attracts a new audience of nature and/or culture travel enthusiasts.
- Brunei:
- Cambodia: like a few other destinations, Cambodia is associated with a particular place. In this case, it’s Angkor—a unique and magnificent site. But the Khmer country is far from limited to this alone and will delight, much like its Laotian neighbor, lovers of local cultures and nature-adventure, including off-the-beaten-path experiences.
- Indonesia: the vast archipelago has more than enough to delight every type of traveler. Between Bali and its beaches, countless diving and surfing spots, the jungles of Kalimantan and beyond, omnipresent volcanoes, traces of the past, and populations with cultures still very much alive, everyone can indeed find something to suit them.
- Laos: though close to destinations like Vietnam or Thailand, Laos stands apart from them. The country is less frequented, and the people are more "relaxed" and smiling. In short, according to the widely accepted concept, the place is "more authentic"!
- Malaysia: this may be the most culturally and geographically contrasting country in the region, with its modern and dynamic mainland on one side and the wilder, more "adventurous" northern part of Borneo on the other. In short, Malaysia is a complete destination, even if for many, its discovery is limited to its western part.
- Philippines: once largely ignored by European tourists, the archipelago is now experiencing growing enthusiasm, driven by its colonial remnants, local cultures, lush nature, and above all, magnificent beaches and renowned diving spots.
- Singapore: welcome to another world! The "city-state-island" of Singapore has nothing in common with the rest of the region, with its (ultra) modern, sanitized, and regulated style. That doesn’t stop it from being of interest, especially if you’re a fan of urban tourism or looking for a quiet break during a long journey through Southeast Asia.
- Thailand: the most touristy but also the most diverse country in the region, though it offers both the best and the worst in many areas. Despite this, every visitor usually finds something to enjoy, whether in nature, adventure, culture, or relaxation. The key is perhaps just knowing where you’re going and what you want to do...
- East Timor:
- Vietnam: this is one of the favorite destinations for lovers of Southeast Asia. With its rich cultural heritage, populations with traditions still very much alive, varied and remarkable landscapes, Vietnam remains the best representation of what this part of the world has to offer.
