Health and Safety in Russia

Official Recommendations

In France, both for individuals and professionals, the "travel advice" from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding precautions for each country has legal value. A similar online travel advice system exists in several countries:

Health

No vaccinations are mandatory to enter the country, though it is still advisable to be up to date with your "basic vaccinations."

Health Insurance and Repatriation

This is one of the mandatory documents for obtaining a Russian visa. The insurance must cover the entire planned stay, and the insurer must be recognized by the Russian authorities.

Safety

Crime and Delinquency

Crime levels vary greatly by region but can affect tourists in busy areas, with risks higher for belongings than for people. In short, it’s best to stay at least minimally vigilant.

Scams and "Tourist" Harassment

Socio-Political Risks and Terrorism

Given the country’s size, history, and specificities, risks exist but are limited to certain areas of Russia.

The most critical situation is in the Caucasus (though it has improved slightly), where armed Islamist groups are present. As a result, Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, and North Ossetia are advised against, as is—though to a lesser extent—Karachay-Cherkessia. Elsewhere, the border with Ukraine remains highly sensitive, as does the annexed Crimea.

Foreign Consulates in Russia

If you encounter problems while traveling abroad, your country’s consular services can assist you. It’s also worth noting that if you are an EU citizen and your country is not represented, you can contact any other EU member state’s representation.
