Health and Safety in Saint Lucia

Official Recommendations

In France, both for individuals and professionals, the "travel advice" from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding precautions for each country has legal value. A similar online travel advice system exists in several countries:

Health

As always, it’s best to be up to date with your vaccinations, even though nothing is officially required to enter the country.

Diseases

Saint Lucia doesn’t pose any major health risks. Dengue fever and, more recently, chikungunya—both spread by certain mosquitoes—are present. To protect yourself, the best approach is to use a good repellent, cover your arms and legs at dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and bring an impregnated mosquito net if you’re sleeping in a place without air conditioning or airflow. Occasionally, there are cases of leptospirosis, a disease transmitted through animal waste (such as rats) that contaminates soil and water. Beyond washing your hands regularly, it’s best to avoid contaminated or stagnant water, as well as dirty surfaces in public places.

Hygiene

There are no major risks here either, and the water is safe to drink everywhere. Just remember to stay hydrated, protect yourself from the sun during the hottest parts of the day, and wash your hands regularly.

Local Healthcare Facilities

While local facilities are adequate for many needs, serious cases—including scuba diving accidents—are often evacuated to Martinique. Unlike in France, healthcare services generally require upfront payment.

Safety

Crime and Delinquency

Though not widespread, petty crime has been increasing in Saint Lucia in recent years. There is a risk of burglaries, theft, and very rarely, personal assaults. However, with basic common sense and precautions—such as avoiding deserted beaches and isolated areas at night—you can stay safe.

Scams and "Tourist" Harassment

Socio-Political Risks
