Overview of the Offer

Las Terrenas, République Dominicaine
Las Terrenas, République Dominicaine

The Dominican Republic has a substantial accommodation capacity with around 90,000 rooms, reflecting the number of visitors it welcomes. The only "drawback" is that in many coastal areas, the offer revolves almost exclusively around large all-inclusive resort complexes or the rental of high-end villas and apartments. While their one- or two-week package deals may seem appealing, the nightly rates—if that option is even available—are far from budget-friendly. In short, this isn’t necessarily ideal for independent travellers on a tight budget.

That said, it’s still possible to find more affordable options here and there in the most tourist-heavy zones, and even more easily elsewhere—whether in the island’s central region, its barely touristy southwest, or even in the capital.

Hotels and All-Inclusive Resorts

High-End and All-Inclusive

A wide selection, best booked as all-inclusive packages. From 1,000 € per week all-inclusive, you can find decent options departing from Europe. Otherwise, if booking by the night, expect at least 100 € for a double room in this category. Note that some resort complexes are starting to show their age, so it’s better to opt for newer or recently renovated ones that offer a more appealing or destination-appropriate look—even if the result can sometimes be a bit kitsch.

Other Hotels

In the capital, the cordillera, or the southwest region, you’ll also find more standard local hotels. While their prices are nothing like those in tourist zones, neither is their setting or general comfort. That doesn’t mean they aren’t pleasant to stay in—it’s just different and reflects another side of the country. Budget around 20 €–25 for a double room in a basic but decent option.

Other Options

Apartments and Villas

Alongside hotels, beach resorts often also offer a range of well-equipped, high-quality villas or apartments for rent. If you’re travelling with a group, a weekly rental can be a great deal, giving you more freedom and privacy than an all-inclusive resort.

Homestays

This concept isn’t widely developed in the country, and options are very limited.

Camping

There are no campsites on the island, and wild camping is somewhat discouraged for safety reasons. As for pitching a tent on beaches near resort complexes, chances are the hotels won’t appreciate it...

Which Accommodation to Choose?

For a "relaxation-beach holiday" trip, the all-inclusive option is undoubtedly the most suitable. If you plan to venture beyond these areas or travel around, small local hotels will do just fine.
