Other practical information for Central America
Baggage and equipment to bring
For coastal areas and beach resorts, pack lightweight clothing at any time of year, plus a sweater for evenings or air conditioning. For the interior and mountains, warmer clothes are recommended. Also bring sun protection and, crucially, rain gear (even in the dry season), as well as good hiking shoes if you plan to trek.

French language use
French is rarely spoken in Central America. You may find it—barely—in a few tourist areas or hotel complexes, such as the Riviera Maya in Mexico. Otherwise, you’ll need to rely on English (in tourist zones and the Caribbean coast) and, of course, Spanish. If you’re traveling independently, especially off the beaten path, knowing at least a few words of Spanish will be very helpful.
