Climate and Weather in Nicaragua

Climate Overview

Nicaragua has a hot, humid tropical climate with two distinct seasons: the dry season ("summer") and the rainy season ("winter"). The dry period runs from December to April and offers more bearable heat, with lower humidity than the rest of the year. This is also the climatically recommended season. The rainy season (May–November) brings heavy downpours, often in the late afternoon, and hurricanes on the Caribbean coast, which are most frequent in September–October.

That said, regional variations exist. While temperatures in the lowlands hover around 30°C during the day and 20–23°C at night, altitude cools things slightly, sometimes making the central highlands a bit chilly. The biggest climatic differences, however, are between the country’s two coasts. The Caribbean coastline receives far more rainfall than its Pacific counterpart. Precipitation can be four to five times higher (July is the worst), and the dry season often lasts only three months, from February to April.

Best Time to Visit Nicaragua

Since few travelers head to the Caribbean coast, the dry period from late November to early May is the most favorable for exploring the country. This avoids the rains, which can cause issues—especially on the coasts, where the atmosphere is also quite muggy during this time. For those planning to visit the eastern coast, the best window is February to April, when rainfall is minimal.
