Panama: Climate and Weather
FR

Climate Overview

Like its neighbors, Panama has a hot, humid tropical climate with two distinct seasons: the dry season ("summer") and the rainy season ("winter"). The dry period runs from January to April and offers more bearable heat with lower humidity than the rest of the year. This is the climatically recommended season. The rainy season (May to late December, peaking in October-November) brings heavy downpours, often in the late afternoon, along with heat and humidity. The eastern border with Colombia has the most humid climate, while the southwest coast is relatively sheltered. The Caribbean coast also receives more rainfall than its Pacific counterpart.

To escape the mugginess, you can head to the mountains near Costa Rica, where temperatures are significantly more pleasant—even cool at times or at night. Note that hurricanes from the Antilles do not affect Panama’s coastline.

Best Time to Visit Panama

The dry season from late December to late April is the most suitable for exploring the country. This avoids the heavy rains that can cause issues, particularly on the coasts where the atmosphere is also muggy during this period. However, even in the dry season, you may encounter some rainfall on the Caribbean coast.
