Budget

Overall, South America isn’t too expensive to travel in, though it’s true that the many outdoor and adventure activities (diving, surfing, mountaineering, canopy tours, etc.) can quickly inflate your budget, as can visiting some must-see spots like Machu Picchu or Galapagos. Generally, the Andean countries—Bolivia in particular—remain the most affordable destinations.

Daily "backpacker" budget for two people:

  • Bolivia: 20 to 35 € per person.
  • Ecuador: 25 to 35 € per person.
  • Peru: 30 to 50 € per person.
  • Uruguay: 45 to 60 € per person.

What can be expensive:

  • Flights to get there in high season.
  • Certain guided excursions or services (Amazon, mountaineering, salt flats, etc.) that require a minimum budget.

What can be inexpensive:

  • Eating local food.
  • Public transport.
  • Generally, budget hostels and guesthouses.

Bargaining and Tipping:

Bargaining is common in Latin American countries, especially in markets or with street vendors. Tipping isn’t usually mandatory, but it’s always appreciated if you’re happy with a service or experience, especially given local wages.
