Climate and Weather in Ecuador
Climate Overview
Ecuador has three distinct climate zones: the coast (Costa), the highlands (Sierra), and the Amazon (Oriente), with the Galapagos Islands as an additional region.
The Pacific coast enjoys nearly constant temperatures year-round, around 30°C during the day and 20/23°C at night, with a dry season and a rainy season. The dry season generally runs from May to December, while the rainy season spans the rest of the year, more pronounced in the north than the south. The dry season is the most pleasant, as it is slightly cooler and less humid, though it’s best to avoid June to September when the coastline is often shrouded in mist.
In the highlands, the climate is temperate year-round, with temperatures decreasing as altitude rises. For example, in Quito (2,800 m), daytime temperatures hover around 20°C, while nighttime temperatures range from 8 to 10°C. The Sierra experiences rainfall from October to May, while June to August/September is the sunniest and most pleasant period. For those aiming to tackle Andean peaks, the turn of the year is generally the most favorable time.
The Amazon region is the wettest in the country, with rain falling three out of four days year-round. December to February is slightly drier than average, while April is wetter. Temperatures remain fairly constant, averaging 25°C during the day and 17°C at night, but the high humidity makes the Amazonian climate feel oppressive. There isn’t truly an ideal time to visit, though early in the year is often slightly better.
Finally, the Galapagos have a highly variable climate influenced by different ocean currents. From January to May, the coasts experience showers, while the interior sees little rain. For the rest of the year, there is no rain, but coastal fog (garua) appears, while the highlands, also misty, receive rainfall. Overall, early in the year is marginally the best time.
Best Climate Period for Ecuador
Given the country’s climatic diversity, the best time to visit Ecuador depends on the regions you plan to explore, though the Sierra’s climate often dictates travelers’ choices. However, late May to early October is frequently a good compromise for those wanting to experience the whole country.
