Nature-Adventure
Volcanoes, high Andean plateaus, Amazon rainforest, Pacific coastline, plus the unique Galápagos archipelago—Ecuador has all the assets of a nature destination where "outdoor-sports-adventure" activities are also plentiful.
Culture
While the country has almost no pre-Columbian ruins aside from Ingapirca, colonial-era landmarks are relatively numerous, starting in cities like Quito or Cuenca. Beyond this heritage, it’s the life and traditions of the diverse local populations that hold the main cultural appeal for many visitors.
Relaxation-Holidays
Even though the coast has several beach resorts (Manta, Atacames...), the country isn’t truly a "relaxation-holiday" destination. People clearly come for other reasons, and the beaches are often just a complement to an active and generally packed stay elsewhere in Ecuador.
Independent Travel
Ecuador is a relatively easy country to travel in, not requiring much experience—though basic security precautions are necessary in places like Quito or Guayaquil. Infrastructure and facilities are quite good, with plenty of budget-friendly options, and transport is abundant for short distances. In short, it’s a great destination for beginner travelers and even a solid first choice for those looking to explore Andean countries.
Organized Travel
Ecuador is far less prominent in tour operators’ catalogs than neighboring Peru. The offerings primarily revolve around "nature-adventure" circuits, with must-sees like "the Avenue of Volcanoes", the Amazon, and, optionally, an extension to the Galápagos. Meanwhile, "community tourism" is growing, allowing travelers to live with and meet Andean or Amazonian populations. And of course, Ecuador is also a hub for trekking and mountaineering, with several peaks to climb.
Note that for organization, whether for the Amazon or climbing certain volcanoes, it’s highly recommended to use a local or "international" agency (or guide) to make the most of it.

Gay, Lesbian
Although homosexuality has had "legal recognition" in the country for around twenty years, Ecuadorian society remains quite conservative, and homosexuality is only moderately accepted by much of the population.
