Accommodation in Ecuador
Overview of the offer
Accommodation in Ecuador largely revolves around small hotels and guesthouses, with occasional options for camping or lodges in natural settings. In Amazon Rainforest, choices are more limited (and thus often more expensive), so it may be useful to bring your own hammock. Another special case: the Galapagos, where prices are traditionally much higher than those on the mainland.
Note that during high season (summer, around Christmas, etc.), hotel rates can rise significantly in the most popular spots, though they generally remain affordable for most foreign visitors. Also, keep in mind that VAT (12%) and service charges (10%) are not always included in the displayed prices.
Hotels
High-end
Luxury hotels can be found in Quito and the country’s main cities. However, if you’re looking for high-end options, it might be better to choose charming establishments like old colonial mansions in the city, haciendas in the countryside, or a lodge deep in the Amazon rainforest. You can find options for under $100 per night.
Mid-range
This is essentially the standard hotel, bungalow, or guesthouse accustomed to visitors, offering enough comfort for a pleasant stay. Depending on the location, you’ll find private bathrooms, TV, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, or heating. Generally, for $25 to $30 for a double room, you’ll already have a solid first choice.
Budget
These small local hotels or family-run guesthouses provide basic comfort if you’re not too demanding. You can sleep for under $10 (dormitory) or $15–$20 for a double room in many cases.
Other options
Camping
There isn’t really a formal camping scene in Ecuador, and wild camping isn’t always ideal for safety reasons unless you’re staying with a local who has given prior permission. That said, you may still have the chance to sleep in a tent or hammock during treks in the forest or the highlands. In short, camping in Ecuador is more about lacking alternatives for a place to sleep than a preference or necessity, given the relatively low cost of local guesthouses.

Which accommodation to choose?
Mid-range accommodation is a good option to consider, whether in the form of hotels or guesthouses.
