Entry Requirements and Visa for Iceland
People
For French Citizens
Nothing could be simpler since Iceland is part of the Schengen Area. For a tourist trip lasting less than 3 months, a valid passport or national identity card is sufficient, provided it covers the entire duration of your stay.
Other Nationalities
The same applies to Canadians, Swiss nationals, European Union citizens, and a few other nationalities. For other visitors, a Schengen visa valid for the 29 members of this area is required for a tourist stay of less than 3 months.
Long Stays
For European Union citizens or Swiss nationals, it’s also quite straightforward. For stays longer than 3 months, you simply need to register at the National Registry Office to regularise your situation. After this, you’ll receive a registration number essential for any process in the country. However, to be admitted, you’ll still need to prove that you have a job in Iceland, are a student, or have sufficient funds to support yourself without relying on the Icelandic social system.
In Case of Violation
Even if you’re a Schengen Area national, overstaying your permitted duration is considered an offence under Icelandic law. At best, you’ll be asked to regularise your situation; otherwise, you may face a fixed fine, possible deportation, and a ban from the country for a certain period.
Vehicles
Since Iceland is accessible by ferry from Denmark, some travellers bring their own vehicle, typically a 4x4. This idea requires a modest budget and some paperwork, starting with a Declaration to Icelandic Customs a few weeks before departure to prove your vehicle is in order.
Note that since 2026, the country has applied a kilometre-based tax to all vehicles driving in Iceland. For short-term visitors, it’s a flat fee if you stay less than a month; beyond that, it’s calculated based on actual mileage.
