Climate and Weather in Norway

Climate Overview

The defining feature of Norway’s climate is its variability and unpredictability. This means you’ll need to plan your gear accordingly, especially if you’re heading out on a hike. However, the climate is less harsh than you might expect, at least along the coastal areas. Thanks to the effects of the Gulf Stream, temperatures are milder on the coast than inland.

Along the coast, winters are relatively mild for the latitude, though rain is common roughly every other day year-round (worst from September to December). Summers are pleasant, particularly in the far south, but remain rainy like the rest of the year. Temperatures gradually drop as you head north. In any case, summer nights are cool, as is the water in the fjords and the sea.

Inland, conditions are radically different, with more distinct seasons—warmer summers (sometimes up to 30°C in Oslo) and much colder winters, where temperatures can drop below -30°C between December and March in the north, which is naturally colder. Another difference from the coast: inland areas get about half as much rain.

Between mid-May and late June, the midnight sun shines over North Cape. As for the northern lights, they’re most frequently seen above the Arctic Circle from late autumn to early spring.

Best Time to Visit Norway

June to early August is the best time to visit for pleasant weather, long days, and outdoor activities. For those wanting to experience winter, December to March is ideal.

Sea Temperatures Throughout the Year

As expected, water temperatures are never very high, with only the hardiest hoping to swim in midsummer along the southernmost coast.
